My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Drake is a gorgeous 2 year old fawn male with cropped and standing ears. He is excellent in his crate, happy to be occupied with a chewy, loves toys, and loves people! He is all kissies and leans with new people, both male and female. Although Drake was living with other dogs, both small and large, in his previous home, he has not been good at all with other dogs he's met in rescue. In fact, he's been quite snarly. We also noticed his play with his original dane sister borders on not playing - it's not only rough, he's constantly trying to push her around and is quite obnoxious. We're speculating he was OK living with the other dogs because he was a pup brought into a place with other dogs already established. Now that he's socially maturing, he doesn't want other dogs around. Drake also is not good with kids. While a grandchild was a frequent visitor to his original home, he is growling at the young child in his current foster home, and will not tolerate him. Again, this could be because he's reached social maturity and has decided that he no longer has to be nice to kids, whereas as a pup, he didn't get to make that choice. Drake has met cats and seemed unfazed by them, but we have no way of knowing whether he would tolerate living with them. On his plus side, and there are many pluses for him, Drake walks very well on leash and is used to being walked in a city environment. While he doesn't like the gentle leader, he also really doesn't need one to be walked. He is also excellent in the crate, and settles down easily. He is super affectionate and ready to be loved and adored by men and women alike. Physically, Drake is in good shape overall, although he does have 2 very large lick granulomas on his back legs, most likely from being crated too long. He licks them when he's bored or anxious, and that calms him down. He is a big boy at 160-170 lbs, standing tall with cropped ears and a good weight. For training and living, Drake responds well to a "say Please" (also called Nothing in Life is Free) way of living. He needs structure and a clear leader, BUT he would not respond well to being challenged constantly in a battle to determine who's top dog. Drake can be very good natured and responds extremely well to positive training -- treats, praise for good things, ignoring bad behavior. His ideal owner would have no dogs or kids, be active and keep him active, be a leader without pushing him constantly, and keep him occupied. In return, he'll shower you with love and affection and be a star dane who will keep you entertained. Drake came to MAGDRL in May 2009.

Update 5/30/09 - Drake was tested with several different female dogs, and we've discovered that he can live with another dog of a certain type. The dog must be socially appropriate and willing to play. Drake is obnoxious with other dogs, and will pester them repeatedly to play. If they engage, his play becomes more appropriate, if they don't, he could be annoying. Adoption with another dog is possible but there's a right dog for him and a wrong dog for him - consideration will be given on a case-by-case basis. Drake will take some time to adjust to a new home and should be allowed to do things at his own pace. His adopters will need to give him direction - he can't be told no, but instead needs to be told what to do. He's very good when he knows what's expected. He is now gated in a room with his favorite chair to snuggle on and is doing well with that arrangement. He does not do well in a kennel, and lost a LOT of weight very quickly in a short time when kenneled. An at-home sitter will be needed for vacations. Drake will make the right adopter a wonderful companion - he's smart, and goofy and silly and sweet. He likes to be outdoors and doing something. He's affectionate but not super clingy, he's happy to play and chase ropes/sticks, and he's calm in the house.
