Bugle was rescued from the Hesperia Animal Shelter. He is a larger scruffy terrier, a happy, playful boy, about age one-and-a-half, and weighing approximately 38 lbs. He appears to be a Pointing Wire-hair Griffon mix/Border terrier mix. A plus about Bugle is that he is a great medium-size, giving one a larger dog feel without actually having a large dog. Though he has a scruffy coat, it is soft and does appear to be on the shorter side, making his grooming needs easier, though clipping away at the wispy hairs around his eyes allows for one to see his cute face better. His coat appears to be of the lower shedding nature.
Bugle is a typical scruffy terrier type in is a smart dog, making training a huge plus whereby he will relish in training, would love training to satisfy his mental stimulation needs, and should respond to training quite well. He has enjoyed playing with other dogs at the rescue, both Bacon, a submissive boy dog, and Gemma, a slightly more dominant female dog, but he can also just chill and hang out with you on a pet bed while you are working at the computer or watching T.V. Bugle is actually quite calm in the house, enjoys being near his person, and does not seem to be destructive towards anything in the house.
One great thing about Bugle is that when I increase my voice and correct him, he does submit to me and seems to want to please. It is common with these stray dogs that end up in shelters to not have some of the basic training and commands down, and of course, he, like all other rescue dogs, would benefit from being afforded that baseline, whereby all signs indicate that he would pick things up quickly. In Bugle, I see an inherently good dog, whereby like all dogs, is looking for a (human) leader to guide him. Bugle would enjoy walking or training or even learning tricks. He likes treats, making training easier. As stated, Bugle is a good balance of being playful and chilling out and he also rides well in the car.
Bugle is very sweet and endearing to people. He is wonderful with all people and kid safe. He is very interested in what I am doing and being near me. He tends to jump up for affection and attention when meeting new people (because he is excited, and he does not do this to me at all, it’s just meeting new people because he is so excited) so work with the “off” command is needed. Bugle has warm, loving eyes that look up at you with love and affection. He wants approval and to please.
The best fit for Bugle is to be placed with someone who he can look to, to be his leader; someone to guide him and direct him in the proper ways and provide for his needs. Bugle is generally a dog social dog and likes all dogs and wants to play, but seems too immature for the large scare wildness of a dog park setting and would be better in play dates with neighborhood and friends’ dogs. A home where people will employ some type of formal training milieu, even if just the basic PetSmart or Petco class, would be good. I definitely think that Bugle would benefit from a home with a yard and not as an apartment dog, but I remain open to possibilities as people write to me describing their situation. Bugle is a wonderful dog that truly loves all people, and anyone adopting Bugle would be lucky to have him.
NOTE: We only adopt dogs as primarily INDOOR dogs. Dogs can go outside to play, potty, to sun themselves at will, but should never be excluded to an outside area. You do not need to give a dog the run of the entire house, and an appropriate sized wire crate works very well during a transitional phase.
