My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

German Shepherd Lovers Wanted!

Reggie is a stunning LARGE male black shepherd and lab mix male. He can't seem to catch a break in this life, so we are working to make sure his next family is his FOREVER family!

Reggie's first family who got him as a cute puppy got a divorce before Reggie even turned a year old and dumped him at a kill shelter where he was on the list to be euthanized, as owner surrenders typically are, simply because of lack of space. Then, he was adopted by a family with a baby, and Reggie is very loved, but is very protective of his family who now has another baby and doesn't have the time to invest in properly training him. When the parents are overwhelmed the dog suffers! It's Reggie's turn to find his happily ever after, and we are determined to help him make this next transition be his last!

Reggie is a fully vetted, neutered, microchipped male shepherd/lab mix with no current health issues. He is about 4 years old and is housebroken and crate trained. He has outgrown all puppy destructiveness and is ready for a calm, steady owner who can be his leader, because Reggie just simply does not want to have to make the all-important decisions about what is safe and what is dangerous. Reggie needs someone experienced with being a dog's confident leader who takes Reggie's guesswork out of strangers coming to the home so he can relax and enjoy having company too!

Reggie's good qualities:

— Always gentle, friendly with his family and people he’s been introduced to
— Calm and mellow with his family
— Loves pets, ear rubs, very affectionate - a lovely dog!
— Extremely tolerant of little babies and toddlers that he knows, they can do anything and he won’t react.
— Calm and content when his family is nearby
— Gets along fine with other dogs if he is not with an anxious handler
- Reggie is clicker trained and responds well to positive reinforcement.
— trained to accept and wear a muzzle (but dislikes)
— Has never been a puller - likes to stay close to his person when being walked on leash

Reggie had NO negative experiences in his first foster home prior to his current family adopting him with the exception of some separation anxiety where he was clearly anxious when left - but this is also a dog who has been abandoned by his owners, so that is to be expected. He was great with people, leash walking, other dogs, and strangers coming to the home. However, he has developed some negative behaviors of over-protectiveness which we believe are largely caused by his owners' anxiety.

In his current home, he is overly protective in response to their anxiety and has developed separation anxiety not wanting to be away from them. He has lunged at people coming in the home unannounced (strangers) and has bitten one who rang the bell and then walked in surprising everyone, including Reggie. These are not abnormal shepherd behaviors - these dogs are incredibly intelligent and loyal to their families. However, Reggie's current family is no longer willing to have him around so we are working to find him a new placement with a family that understands the breed as well as the fact that poor Reggie's life has not been one of consistency up until this point. Reggie deserves some consistency and someone to count on no matter what! He also deserves someone who understands that he is terrified of being abandoned and is willing to work with him on that.

Reggie has undergone intensive training and his new family will also receive a paid training package and must agree to and be committed to following through on all aspects of the training to ensure Reggie's continued success.
