My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Our Kiara is an impossibly cute, cuddly little girl. At 11 years old, she was surrendered to NYCACC by an anxiety-ridden owner, who was battling a bevy of personal problems. Despite her abrupt uprooting, Kiara seemed to fare well in the shelter and remained gentle and sweet in demeanor.

After a few days in the shelter environment, Kiara began to show signs of depression, so our shelter contacts rerouted her to our Rescue for some TLC. Our hope for Kiara was that she could unwind in a friendlier environment, and we could better evaluate her true nature before adoption. We were delighted to snatch up this beauty, so that we could find her a forever home.

It's a shocker that Kiara should wind up homeless and alone, when she has such a sweet and genial good nature. Shelter staff pegged her as a Shih Tzu/Havanese mix. We're not quite sure about her breed mix, but we're darn sure there's a whole lot of Cuteness going on. Kiara is a total love and has real lap dog potential. She doesn't seem to have the over the top energy that we see in some small breeds. Instead, Kiara approaches cautiously, and waits for an invitation to smother her person with kisses! She is an affectionate girl, who bonds quickly, once she trusts.

At 15 pounds, Kiara is slightly overweight. and shows some signs of poor diet. Her pearly gray coat has some thinning, but has begun to rebound nicely with better diet and nutrition. Kiara's shortened muzzle makes a case for Shih Tzu DNA. Her coat is soft, fluffy, and will require professional grooming a few times a year. She is dream at the Groomer, no muzzle required.

Kiara would be a great choice for an active single or couple who enjoy a medium energy, tiny companion dog. She would be an enthusiastic companion on mild walks or hikes, and she loves to travel, and be part of the action. Kiara could also join an active family with older kids, who have been taught to handle small dogs respectfully. We would like to steer clear of toddlers, because they may overwhelm her.

Kiara is a social girl, and could easily join a home with other well trained, energetic dogs. We have not exposed her to cats, but she is mild mannered enough to co-exist with them. She has begun to grasp the basics of leadership and obedience work, and has passed a few of the Canine Good Citizen tests. Kiara has the potential to excel in this program.

Kiara is in great health, and has been recently spayed. She would benefit from ongoing healthy diet and exercise, and weight management as she lives out her golden years. She has had full diagnostic bloodwork, that adopters can use as a baseline going forward. She has had a complete dental procedure. She has been vaccinated for rabies and DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza and coronavirus). She has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. She has been microchipped and dewormed.
