My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sometimes we have to scratch our heads in amazement when we come across a dog like our Tony in Rescue. How could such a darling little boy, such a desirable breed mix, size and temperament, wind up homeless in a large city shelter. Then we discovered the not entirely surprising reason: his owner had a baby, and out went Tony with the bathwater. At the age of ten, this unlucky cutie could not catch a break!

After coming to the shelter as an owner surrender, Tony had passed all his behavior evaluations, and earned himself a spot in the shelter adoption program. And then, he was diagnosed with bladder stones, and was booted from the adoption program into the sick ward. Tony was greenlighted for euthanasia, but he charmed his shelter caretakers, and in turn, they reached out to us on his behalf. We were thrilled to have Tony join us. Country life agrees with him.

Tony had a run of bum medical luck during his first months with us. He weathered bladder stone surgery well, but while on the mend, he sustained scratches to both corneas, and underwent treatment with antibiotic eye drops, which he did not like one bit. Over the course of a few months, all of Tony's medical issues have resolved, and our vet has cleared him for adoption.

Seasoned Shih Tzu lovers will swoon over this 12 pound cutie's charming demeanor. He appears to be Shih Tzu, and has all of the "small dog, big ego" traits that Shih Tzu folks clamor for. Tony would be a great addition to a rescue savvy dog home, with an active adult single or couple who can handle grooming issues with patience. The little guy is still a bit sensitive in the eye area, although our groomer was able to manage him easily.

Tony is outgoing and friendly, and greets everyone with a grin and puppy kisses. He would be a great choice for an active retiree or an apartment dweller. We'd trust him with other dogs and possibly cats, as well. Tony is a versatile and adaptable dog, with a spry, energetic vibe. He needs a couple of brisk daily leash walks, as well as lots of attention and focused playtime. Tony is a joyous little soul, who lights up the room when he enters.

Tony is in good health, and has been neutered. He has just had a full dental procedure, which cost him some sketchy teeth. His pre-op bloodwork was normal. He has been vaccinated for Rabies and DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza, and coronavirus). He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been microchipped and dewormed.
