My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Benji. He is 7-1/2 years old and a bigger fellow at 25 pounds. Benji is a handsome most likely Schnauzer/Doxie mix with a touch of Yorkie. How cute is that? He is being fostered in Leesburg, FL.

UPDATED BIO 06/18/2019: Meet Benji, the boy who loves everyone, kids over 9 years old, other submissive dogs, and sturdy toys he can’t destroy.

He’s a walker! Perfectly leashed trained He will keep you company on your walks. In fact he wants to keep you company all day and night. No crate for this sweet boy while you are at home. He knows his place is by your side. Benji’s perfect home would include a stay at home parent.

Benji has dry eye. His meds cost $15 a month. Untreated this can result in severe eye problems. It only takes 1 drop of medicine 2 times a day to keep this boy’s eyes healthy.

He thinks he is a lap dog, and if you let him, he will jump up onto your lap for cuddles. Whoever is lucky enough to adopt this great boy will be getting the best doggie ever. Benji is waiting for you to make him your own

UPDATED BIO 06/06/2019: Benji is the sweetest guy. Because Benji is bigger than most Yorkies at almost 25 pounds and with a long body, it is thought that he may be a Schnauzer/Yorkie/Dachshund mix or possibly a Cairn Terrier/Yorkie/and maybe Dachshund mix. Whatever mix-a-doodle he is - he is very, very cute.

Benji had a good first vet visit. His heart and lungs are good and strong. His blood work showed normal kidney and liver values, but he is anemic. His blood count is a bit on the low side, so he is getting Pet-Tinic twice a day; this is a daily vitamin supplement that contains iron, copper and 5 other essential vitamins that he needs. Poor Benji also has a little case of tapeworms. When Animal Control picked him up off the streets, he was full of fleas and lethargic from being in the heat for days and days. The fleas are the reason for the tapeworms, and the days on the street scrounging for food as well as the fleas are the reasons for the anemia. He will be done with his treatment the last week of June when he goes back for a recheck of his blood levels and to make sure all the pesky worms are dead and gone. After that checks out and all is good with his health, Benji will be ready for his perfect forever home.

Benji is such a good dog and just loves everyone. He was so excited to meet all the people at the vet clinic. He had to say Hi to everyone. He was almost perfect at the groomer, though he got a little scared when the groomer’s assistant went to pick him up and he wasn’t ready for it. He didn’t like that and let her know it. Benji loves kids, but he doesn’t like to be grabbed, so he would do best in a home with well-behaved kids who are over the age of 9 years old.

Benji more than anything loves attention and love from his people. He will even bark for attention, but his foster parents are working on that undesirable behavior. When they tell him “No Barking”, he does stop. He is smart and learns quickly. He may be mostly house-trained, but it is possible he will have accidents in the house until he gets accustomed to the smells and routine of the household. Benji loves to be outside in the fenced yard. He walks great on a leash and does well in the car. He is just a sweet, loving, good boy who definitely loves people and wants to please them. He is fine with other dogs, but his preference is, for sure, people. He will try to get between his people and another dog if he thinks he should be getting the attention. He isn’t mean, but if there is another dog in the home it needs to be a more submissive dog who likes to share his or her people and toys. Benji does like squeaky toys.

Benji must have been crated for hours and hours at his former home. His teeth are all ground down and the vet suggested it was from chewing on a crate to either get out or because he was so bored and sad. Benji would not like being crated in his forever home. He wants to be with his people and even sleep with them. If you try to put him in a crate or even a puppy play pen, he will try to do what he can to not let you put him in. He is fine behind a gate if no one is home, but not if you are home and he can’t get to his people. Benji’s perfect home would be one where his people would be home a lot with him and not try to crate this loving, sweet boy.

We are taking applications for Benji in hopes that his perfect home is out there waiting just for him. Don’t let Benji’s size scare you away. He is so sweet and there is just more of him to love and to give you love. He gives such good kisses, and although he is a little big to be a lap dog, he loves to be close to his people, and if they let him, he likes to be on their lap. Whoever is lucky enough to adopt this great boy will be getting the best doggie ever. Benji is waiting for your application hoping you are the one to give him his forever home.
