My story

If pictures say a thousand words, it`s still not enough to describe this adorable mug, Helios. He came to the shelter with a couple marks on his record, but since being here, we have fallen in love with him! Understandably, Helios has a few trust issues, and it will take time getting to know him and earn his tail wags and cuddles, but who ever said dating was all fun and games?

Helios absolutely LOVES going on walks! It`s his all-time favorite thing to do. If you say `walkies` he will sprint for his harness ?? He enjoys napping during the day on his puppy bed, chewing bones, or Helios is also super-duper dog social and he would love to live with a playful doggie friend or two! He is incredibly well-behaved when left alone in the home, and he is house trained. As Helios does need slow introductions to new people, he may do best in a low-traffic home.

Helios has some wonderful quirks that make his foster parents love him even more. He likes to push his dinner bowl around until he finds the perfect spot to eat. He will jump up on couches or side tables to observe all he can see. He will also tap the back door with his front paw to let you know he needs to go outside. And he sighs (usually 4 times) when he is settled in for the night. What more is there to ask for in such a cute little dude?

The Orange Dot Crew (a volunteer advocacy group at Austin Animal Center) will be there every step of the way to make sure that your new pet is set up for success with their new family. If you think you`re ready, email the shelter about Helios and his staff advocates can tell you all about him!

Additional adoption info

Our standard Adoption fee for healthy, younger pets is $75. Pets over 7 years old have no adoption fee. Adoption includes a microchip and collar & tags, all the vaccinations a pet is old enough to receive, and spay or neuter surgery. Adopters must be at least 18 yrs old with a current photo ID. Pets already in the home should have a current rabies vaccination and we may need to confirm permission for adoption from the owner of the property where an adopter lives.

Go meet their pets

The Austin Animal Center is open for adoptions every day from 11:00am to 7:00pm. We're closed Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Thanksgiving Day to give our staff some time with family. Interested adopters should come to the shelter during business hours to meet with a counselor start looking for a pet who'll be a good fit. Our counselors and volunteers are happy to help with that process.

More about this shelter

Austin Animal Center is the largest open-intake animal shelter in central Texas and we work very hard to try to save 90% or more of the thousands of animals we shelter every year. We always need volunteers and both monetary and in-kind donations to help us in our sheltering and prevention activities. Visit our website to find out how you can help!
