My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Chocolate is a 3-year-old neutered male black lab. Chocolate weighs 50 pounds and is up to date on shots. This dog is approved for homes with children ages 10 and up.

DESCRIPTION:

UPDATE: September 13, 2019: Chocolate continues to show his eagerness to learn and to please his people. His smile is stealing hearts! A more fitting name for him may be Shadow as he never leaves his foster's side. See his pretty, patient sit at: https://youtu.be/SaoMUx1IBNQ.

September 8, 2019: This guy is a total sweetheart. Chocolate loves to snuggle and get head scratches, and he gets along very well with the resident dog. He loves to be around his people and will jump right up on the couch or bed to be near you, but also will get down when asked.

Chocolate is crated during the work day with no issues, and he sleeps in the master bedroom on the floor or dog bed. He is 100% housebroken and will let his foster know when he needs to go out. He loves his treats and sits and takes them with a gentle mouth when offered. As for food, he's obviously very excited to eat, but is calm around his foster and and the resident dog during meal preparation. He needs a bit of leash work, as he is a puller; this training will be the focus after he completes his heartworm treatment and can exercise regularly. Chocolate is a curious boy and is very interested in the birds, squirrels, rabbits, and even the deer in the yard. A fenced yard will allow him the freedom to chase them, at will!

September 2, 2019: Lovable Chocolate was the best house guest this weekend! There was no barking or begging and he sticks to his fosters like glue. They had neighbors over and he didn't miss a beat - he was happy to see them and perfectly at ease. Chocolate wants to snuggle with you and/or your resident dog as he's proven time and time again:)

August 31, 2019: Chocolate is settling in nicely with a new foster. They learned a lot about him in a couple of days. Chocolate loves to give kisses and he is relaxed around food, calmly hanging out while breakfast is prepared for he and the resident pup. He sleeps through the night, is snuggly, loves to be brushed, takes treats gently, gets along great with the resident dog, doesn't beg for food, rides well in the car, has not disturbed anything in the house, loves ear and head scratches, delivers the perfect nose nudge when said scratches cease:), loves to be around his people and has a gentle yet playful demeanor! Meet Chocolate and your heart will melt!

July 26, 2019: Chocolate has been working hard to improve his house skills! He is a smart boy and a quick learner. He sits and waits for his meals or to go outside. He loves being outside and is very interested in chasing the squirrels and birds; he should not be in a home with cats, small dogs or other small animals. He still does not crate well, but barks less and calms down when confined to a bedroom with two gates in the doorway.

He is working on his confidence and is getting much better at meeting people, especially men. He is warming up pretty quickly. Chocolate will make a great hiking or trail dog once he is back in shape after recovering from his lung infection, and it would be a great way to help him burn off his young dog energy. His will need lots of exercise, to include a couple of long walks each day and regular running or outdoor playtime. After playtime, Chocolate will be ready to join you on the deck for yappy hour - he loves to be outside, especially with his people!

Chocolate is a little shy when he first meets you, but if you give him a few minutes and get down on his level he will come over and crawl in your lap to get petted. He probably didn't have the best living conditions when he had a home and is enjoying being inside and having a comfortable bed to sleep on. Chocolate would love a home that will give him lots of love, take him for walks and give him Peanut Butter Kong every once in a while. He is an easy dog to be with and will make a wonderful companion for some lucky family. Knows sit, and come. Best with an Easy Walk Harness. He is house trained. Chocolate's Story: He was turned in to along with 3 other dogs to animal control who said he was scared when we got him. He responds to attention and will come up and crawl in your lap to be with you. He will be a beautiful boy with some TLC.

UPDATE: Chocolate is grateful to have a nice place to live and people to love him. He does fine with stairs and does not bark in the house when his foster mom is home - even when the resident dog tries to set a poor example:) Chocolate is making great strides and is walking more confidently and meeting people with excitement. He walked well in the neighborhood on the 4th when a lot of other people were out walking and riding bikes. Chocolate is learning about new things very quickly, and with TLC, patience, and training, he will continue to gain confidence. He tries so very hard to please his people!!

UPDATE: Chocolate is a sweetie pie on the hunt for his new spot. He's good with other dogs, including his 14yo sometimes cranky pants foster sister. He's very inquisitive and interested in everything going on and is a medium energy dog. He walks well on the leash but is a bit nervous to go far from the house, so we are working on his confidence. He'd do great in a house with another dog to play with and show him what toys are all about.
