My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Dusty was picked up as a stray in Monterey with a heavy, bolted collar around his neck. From the state of his coat, his fly bitten ears and some broken teeth from chewing on metal we suspect he had been kept outside on a chain.

After coming into Dusty Paws foster care he has had necessary dental surgery as well as grooming, neutering and all vaccinations. He is now spiffy, more handsome than ever and ready to find a forever loving home.

Dusty is about 60 lbs. but looks larger because of his lush fur coat. We believe he is a cross between a Malamute and a Husky. Because of his prematurely worn teeth, estimating his age is difficult. He may be 5 years old or could be younger.

Dusty is very much enjoying attention and his new life where he is allowed to come inside, get up on chairs and even laps as he wishes. He is content to wander around the house and lie around for naps. He is not a barker and is house trained. Although he loves to roll around on the grass outside, after taking care of business he is quick to run to the back door to get back in. He is a sweet boy, very good with people. Dusty doesn't seem to know basic commands. However, he walks nicely on leash with a harness, not pulling or jumping up on anyone. He enjoys 20 minute walks when it is cool out.

It is likely that his former life at the end of a chain prevented Dusty from normal canine socialization. When on leash, he is selectively reactive when meeting other dogs. Dusty Paws rescue will be working with a trainer on this issue. Dusty currently shares his foster home peaceably with two canine housemates - so far he has been kept apart from the cat but has shown curiosity. Although he tends to poach from others' food bowls and be protective of his own bowl, otherwise he is learning to fit in.

Dusty is a wonderful dog, but is not for the novice dog guardian. We would like him to have a home with folks experienced with northern breeds and committed to continuing any training he may need. For his health and comfort, it is also important that his home be air conditioned.
