My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Gizmo – they sure don’t come any cuter than this! Gizmo was left at AALOC with three other super cute Chihuahuas, along with a note that said: “I am moving out of state today, and cannot take the dogs. I tried to find good homes, but with short notice it was hard. Please take care of them. They are great dogs.”

Gizmo is small, only about 8 pounds, but has the heart of a superhero. He loves his squeaky toys and always carries one with him. Just like Gizmo from the movie “Gremlins,” this Gizmo is the coolest Chihuahua around. Currently being fostered, Gizmo is extremely loving and playful, and gets along with the pack of dogs at the foster house. He is interested in being friends with anyone he meets – human or other.

Chihuahuas are the only “natural” toy breed – other toy breeds have been bred through generations to be smaller dogs. Generally Chihuahuas are healthy and live a long life, with an average lifespan of 12-20 years. They are alert, observant and agile. Although Chihuahuas typically have one of the longest lifespans of any canine, trauma is the second leading cause of death. Causes of fatal trauma include being hit by a car, being accidentally stepped on, and falling from heights or being dropped. Because Gizmo is so small, we are recommending he be adopted to an adult-only family since children cannot always understand tiny dogs must be treated with extra special care.

Although Gizmo was abandoned with three other Chihuahuas he is available as a single dog adoption which is perfect for seniors or apartment dwellers. Chihuahuas are “breed snobs” and do enjoy living with other Chihuahuas. Although not required, we do recommend considering adopting two of the dogs that were abandoned together: Gizmo, Daisy, Charlie and Scooter.

Call us at (714) 893-4393 to make an appointment to meet Gizmo during visiting hours and get to know him a bit before submitting an adoption application. But beware of love at first sight: we think Gizmo is irresistibly cute!
