My story

Sparky wants someone to love him. He is very skittish with new people but once he warms up to you he will be your best friend. Sparky was very neglected and abused in his past life.  He was just skin and bones when we got him. He is a healthy weight now and he is doing really well at learning to trust people again.

Sparky is a very special dog and he requires a patient person who is willing to work with him.  He is very skittish when meeting with strangers and he has his own timing to warm up to different people.  His adopter needs to beware of his bite history.  When he is nervous and being threatened, he may bite if you reach out to him.  Of course, he doesn't do that to people he knows well.  We also do not want him to go to a family with young children.

****Prior to filling out an application or contacting RHS, please completely read the instructions below.****

ALL ADOPTERS/FOSTERS MUST LIVE WITHIN 60 MILES OF RICHARDSON, TX.

RHS IS NOT A SHELTER; OUR PETS LIVE IN FOSTER HOMES IN THE DFW AREA.

Adoption Process:

  1. Meet the Adoption Criteria. Before you do anything else, make sure you meet our adoption criteria. You must be at least 21 years old. You must live within a 60-mile radius of Richardson, Texas. You must share veterinary records for all pets currently in your home and all pets owned in the last five years. All pets in the home must be spayed or neutered. If you rent your home, you must provide verification that pets are allowed on the property. You must be willing to be interviewed by an adoption counselor and you must undergo a home visit from an RHS representative.

  2. Apply. You can complete an application at an MTP event or complete it online by either clicking the button below or the “Adopt” button beneath the pet’s photo in the listings above.

  3. Attend a Meet the Pets (MTP) event. This is a great opportunity to meet the pet you are interested in and see if you connect. We hold these events every Saturday from 1:00-3:00 p.m. We post the pets who are expected to attend on Friday evening on our Facebook page. For exact details and locations, view our event calendar.

  4. Home Visit. If all the steps above are completed satisfactorily, we will set up a home visit where you can meet the pet you are interested in again and the pet can meet other pets in the family. We will try to send the foster parent so you can learn more about how the pet is in a home environment.

  5. Complete Adoption. If all feel it is a good match, we will schedule the adoption at MTP or an off-site location. The applicant will need to complete the adoption contract and pay the adoption fee. Our adoption fee is $250 for adult dogs, $300 for puppies (under 1 year) and $125 for cats. Discounts are available for senior-aged pets.
