My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Ginger is a 5-year old, 17-pound purebred Dachshund who is high-love and low-maintenance. Truth be told, I’ve kept her as a foster dog months longer than I needed to just because she’s such a joy to have around.

Ginger’s goals in life are simple. She wants love (preferably attached to a warm lap), food—yes, please. . .lots of food!—and some toys. She would also not be averse to a squirrel running around the backyard who requires some chasing! A walk now and then would be a bonus. Ginger is well leashed trained and does not pull.

Ginger treats her stuffed chew toys very delicately and has no desire to empty out the stuffing. She also likes nylabones and can amuse herself with one for a long time. She is not an active dog and is perfectly happy to just hang around the house snoozing and munching on toys.

Ginger is very affectionate. She will be happy to snuggle beside you or in your lap as long as you will let her. If you will pet her and tell her what a pretty girl she is, so much the better. If you are very, very good, you may even snag a few kisses.

Ginger is house-trained and crate-trained. At night, she will sleep wherever you put her—in the bed, on a chair, in a crate. She is non-destructive and won’t chew up anything but dog toys. She would make an excellent dog for a home or an apartment.

Ginger would prefer to be an only dog as she would like all the affection, toys and dog food in the house to belong to her. She lives with 4 other dogs and gets along with 3 of them, though she doesn’t interact or play with them. She and the 4th dog get into skirmishes over toys.

As to cats, we had a kitten in a crate at an adoption event, and every time we turned around Ginger was standing by the crate kissing the kitten. So cats are fine. She would also be good with older children.

Ginger was found wandering the streets with her brother in East Texas, and she was a mess. She looked like she’d been beaten up multiple times by other street dogs. She had hookworms, heartworms and a large lump on her chest. But as is always the case, with some medical care and a lot of love, she is a happy, healthy, loving dog.
