From his current foster mom in Costa Rica:
‘...Well I really can not say enough good things about Buddy. I met Buddy in Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica. He was standing outside the grocery store searching all the faces inside. I know the dogs in town and didn't remember seeing him before. He looked over at me as I walked up and when our eyes met he let out a little bark and came over to me. I offered my hand to sniff and then he pushed his head under it. Then he leaned up against me. He followed me around town that day and waited with me while I hitched a ride home.
He was pretty thin and seemed to sometimes favor one back leg. Maybe an old injury?
I was in town two more times that week and each time i came across him he would spend the day with me. At first I thought he must be someones dog as he had been neutered, but the third time i saw he had dropped a little weight so i gave him a good meal. I waited a particularly long time that day to get a ride back maybe 2 hours. Buddy stayed with me the whole time and at one point slept so soundly I started wondering if he had been dropped off in town. His deep sleep gave me the feeling it was the first time he had slept safely in a while.
I did not return to town for another week and a half and wondered if I would see him, how he was. Within a few minutes of walking through our little town from behind I saw a very skinny dog eating what appeared to be dirt. I realized it was Buddy. He had lost a lot of weight and now was showing all of his ribs and hips bones. When I called out his name he turned and looked at me. When he realized it was me he let out a big extended cry / bark and came over to me and pushed his head between my legs. I saw he was no longer able to put any weight on / use his previously favored back leg. He cried in excitement to see me. We went over to the butcher shop and I bought him some lunch and extras. I decided then he truly needed help and took responsibility for him.
Buddy has a way of getting along with all of the dogs and cats he meets. I have two dogs, three cats, free ranging chickens and even guinea pigs and he is incredibly respectful at all times. I think it was his first time seeng horses and cows so he did his best to protect me from them by barking to keep them away until he understood they were friends too! Now he allows them to approach and be close.
I can honestly say I have never seen a dog try so hard to be a good dog. Buddy is a really good dog. In fact if it were not for the opportunity for him to have a loving home with a caring family in Canada I would not let him go.
We estimated his age around 4 years and mostly beagle. However he has not shown himself to be the kind of beagle energy that is always running after something in fact he has never once run or wandered off. I do not have a fenced area for him and although he can be easily tied up /no complaints he has always stayed on the deck or under the house and then follows the pack as we go around the farm. We have a lot of wildlife here in the jungle too and he has not shown a strong drive for hunting and chasing. He is a fabulous dog for activities; hiking, walking, being in the car, visiting friends with dogs and also just for "being". He is content to be on his bed while you read or clean house. When it is time to love up on him he will roll himself onto you and into your lap in pure joy and gratitude. He can be a ham for affection!
Buddy had surgery to put back together the right side of his pelvis which had been broken into several pieces and repair a broken leg bone. It is possibly he was hit by a car or even kicked. He is still healing and just now starting to sometimes put a little weight on the leg. He has done fabulously on three legs following is all around the farm and going down to the beach. The vet expects him to have a full recovery, however there could be a chance of a slight limp.
He has a very playful nature with other dogs and has a way of just entering a group of dogs for the first time and being accepted like an old friend. He has never once tried to chase the cats, the chickens or act in any way other than respectful with kids. In fact he is quite a gentleman at all times. Although he is not a "barker" he will bark protectively when people approach the house. Buddy is a smart dog. He is always watching me and the other dogs to figure out what is expected of him and learns quickly. He is good on leash and was very comfortable riding in the transport carrier for the xrays.
What more can I say...
If someone is ready to bring a mature and respectful beagle dog into their family as a friend for their existing dog and do not want the hassles of puppy training or have a young dog who could benefit from a good role model or even if he is the only dog who will be a cherished partner in life then Buddy is your guy.’
He will be flying into Toronto at the beginning of September.
He is neutered, UTD and we’d love to have an adoptive family waiting for him as he arrives.
