My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Piggy the approximately 10 year old female Bulldog. Piggy has been to the vet for a check up and she weighs around 60 pounds (if I remember correctly), she has been heart worm tested, vaccinated, checked for a spay scar, microchipped, and even had a dental.

Piggy is a senior and does come with some of the typical senior Bulldog issues. She has dry eye and may need OTC dry eye drops to lubricate her eyes or they may get goopy. She needed a medicated ointment when we first got her for about a week and now she has only needed it once in the last month. She has required no other eye maintenance besides that. She doesn't quite "hold it" as long as she used to and when she first came she was having issues urinating in the house unless she had access to a doggy door and then she only had accidents while she was sleeping on her OUTDOOR bed. We started her on PROIN for older dog incontinence and she went from having a potty issue every couple of days to once in the last month...and that was after a long day in the crate and she wasn't let out right away when they got home according to her foster owner. She holds it in her crate during the day for about 4 hours and at night for about 6-8 hours. She will probably need to be on PROIN for the rest of her life. It is about $25 a month. She will be adopted out with a fresh bottle of eye ointment and a fresh bottle of one month of PROIN, which she eats right out of her food bowl.

In many ways Piggy is very healthy for a senior bulldog. She has not developed any type of infections or redness between her skin folds and her tail is kinked in the way that she does not have problems pooping like some bulldogs do. Her skin and coat is in good health and her remaining teeth are as clean as can be after her dental.

Piggy is as sweet as they come and is a very easy dog to take care of. She goes into her crate willingly, we have never heard her bark yet...although she does snort and breath very loudly when excited. She would love a home where she is allowed on the furniture, but she isn't allowed on the furniture in her foster home now, so she does comply reluctantly when we tell her to get off the couch. (If she was allowed on the couch we would suggest getting a doggy washable whelping pad or washable potty pad in case she has a potty problem while she is sleeping it won't wreck your couch.)

We want to be very honest, Piggy is in good health for a senior Bulldog, but she is a SENIOR BULLDOG and they are not known for their longevity. The predicted lifespan is 8-10 years, and with Piggy already being around 10 years old she is up there. With that being said, if she can keep the weight off and continues living the good life in the house with people that love her, we feel she probably has a year or two of quality life in her. Her senior blood panel looked great and she acts like a much younger dog than she is, with the exception being that she sleeps a lot....but that is common in the breed as well so we wonder if she is sleeping all the time because she's a bulldog or because she is a senior.

Piggy is social with people, including children, social with other dogs and social with kitties. Bulldogs can be very off-putting to other dogs because they have big bulgy eyes, they make really weird snorting noises and they are very rude when they play and greet other dogs. Because of this we are going to be very selective about any home that has another dog as a companion for her. The current dog needs to be middle of the road, not too playful that will be too much for her, not aggressive in any way, even if it is just initial bossiness, and not so submissive that the other dog will be fearful of Piggy and all her snorting and shuffling and staring. We want your current dog and Piggy to both be happy with the situation.

The ideal home is one that is Bulldog or Brachycephalic breed knowledgeable. If you have never heard of that then you probably really need to read up on it in order to be able to adopt Piggy. No homes where she would have immediate access to the pool when she is loose in the yard. If you do have a pool it must have a fence around it. Piggy absolutely cannot swim, she sinks like a rock. Bulldogs are not good swimmers at all and she will not be one of those dogs that you can show her the step and teach her to swim like other dogs, she simply cannot have access to the pool or even a decorative pond that isn't fenced. She must have access to an air conditioner or live in a cool climate...no exceptions. She cannot be a dog that is in the yard while you are gone to work. Bulldogs do not do well in the heat and if they get stressed, over excited or have basic exercise when the weather is in the high 80s or above it can be life threatening. She needs to be crated inside when the owners are gone or have access to a room that stays lower than 80 degrees on these hot days to keep her safe. Make sure that this goes for when she is traveling in the car with you, if you have a house sitter or if she has to stay in a kennel make sure they have a climate suitable for a Bulldog.

We would prefer her to go to a home with kids over 10 years of age. She lives in a home now with younger kids and she really enjoys their company, but she also gets overly excited with her toys occasionally and when playing she just clamps on to whatever is near the toy, so if a young child is playing tug of war with a rope and Piggy accidentally grabs the hand, she just continues playing tug with your hand very happily! Gotta love the Bulldogs!!!

She is very low maintenance and has very limited exercise needs. A walk around in the back yard or a short game of tug is fine for her, she doesn't want long walks in the park or a run along a country lane. She will walk with you to the kitchen for a quick snack and then she is good for the day!

Piggy is really really sweet, funny, easy going and a wonderful dog. If you are Bulldog knowledgeable and you are ready for a 4 legged curvy grandma in your life, Piggy is your gal. Her adoption fee is $250 plus a $10.99 microchip registration fee. She is chipped, vaccinated, heart worm negative, spayed, had a dental in September 2019 and a general health check with a geriatric blood panel in August 2019. She comes with 30 days PROIN to help with incontinence and a tube of eye ointment for "as needed" treatment of eye boogies.
