My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Dagwood is a 10-mo-old neutered male yellow lab. Dagwood weighs 70 pounds and is up to date on shots. This dog is approved for homes with children ages 10 and up.

DESCRIPTION:

UPDATE: Dec 1, 2019: Are you home a lot or able to take your dog lots of places with you? Do you have a really laid back dog or no other dogs? Do you love having a faithful friend to just hang out with you while you work in your home office? If so then Dagwood is your boy! Dagwood had a tough start to life and took time to figure out that humans were good! He is not a HUGE fan of the crate of being alone. He is working hard on it and has worked up to being crated in his big wire crate for 2 hours at a time before getting nervous and wanting out. His foster is nice enough to have a big 5x5 indoor kennel with a top for him. Kind of like a HUGE crate! He likes that just fine so if someone was willing to have that kind of set up that would work for him as well. Dagwood is fine with laid back dogs that don't want to be in his face and he loves to go on group walks. He does not like dogs that want to be too up close and personal or try to rough house with him - he is just not that kind of guy! We know there is a special someone out there for this gorgeous but special guy!

Nov 17, 2019: Dagwood's FM is working hard with him on trying to learn to love the crate. He is able to be crated in a wire crate for up to 2 hours now which is a great improvement from the 5-10 minutes in the past. Dagwood is super friendly when greeting people, which is a complete 180 from the scared boy we had at first. He is great on walks with other dogs and still does well with calm dogs that don't want to engage with him. He is still fearful/defensive with dogs that are too bouncy or in his face. He is a little nervous in the car but improving. Dagwood's favorite place to be is laying at FM's feet while she works in her office. He would love someone home with him working from home or just home a lot. Dagwood has a lot of love to give for that special adopter who is able to help him continue to work through his fears and quirks.

Oct 15, 2019: Dagwood is an absolutely gorgeous boy! And super sweet! But he is not without his challenges. Dagwood did not have the greatest start to life living in a pen with at a backyard breeder. He was not really socialized outside of his immediate surroundings. His foster is working on him, and he is very sweet with his foster family. He loves to be around them and just hang out. He is house trained but will get into mischief if left to his own devices like any youngster.

His challenges are:
Containment - his is scared of the crate. He is able to be crated for very short periods but if left too long, he will panic and may hurt himself trying to get out. His foster is working with him on the crate daily, a little at a time. He will need someone home more often than not, or someone willing to have the same set up his foster has which is a 5x5 pen with a top (indoors) as he does really well with that extra space but the confined spaces make him nervous. He cannot have free roam (yet) as he will still get into things if not monitored.

Riding - He is a nervous rider, not horrible but still working towards more confidence there.

Other dogs - after having to fend for himself, he is nervous and cautious with dogs that are "in your face" or want to engage play. He does great in the yard and on walks with other dogs that are calm and can just coexist with him without pushing his boundaries. We are hoping this continues to get better as he learns that he can trust other dogs not to take things from him or hurt him.

Sep 15, 2019: Dagwood is a super sweet boy! When he first came to us he was very scared and timid. He has really come out of his shell and he loves people! He is still leery of other dogs, mostly those that are "in your face" type dogs. He does well with dogs that just coexist with him and do not try to initiate too much. He gets afraid and a little defensive if shown too much attention by another dog. Dagwood has lots of good points. He is good on leash and loves to go on group walks. He is affectionate and well behaved. He is housebroken. He also presents his challenges. He is terrified of a crate and will try to break out. He is an escape artist with containment, possibly from his formative years of having to live in a pen with MANY other dogs. He would be best placed with someone who is home most of the time or where he could go with them a lot. His foster can discuss ideas for him for containment with applicants that fit his needs.
