My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

MEET MAIZIE HOPE. Maizie is a very sweet little yorkie who is 8 years old and only weighs 5 lbs. This little princess is being fostered in Tallahassee, FL .

UPDATED BIO 11/12/2019: Maizie Hope has now been in her foster home for almost 3 weeks and she is doing amazingly well. Maizie was picked up as a stray by Animal Control, and was transferred immediately to an Emergency Vet due to her injuries and medical issues. She had multiple puncture wounds on her muzzle and maggots were in the wounds. She also had cloudy eyes and ocular discharge was also noted. Her muzzle had multiple bite sounds and was swollen and bruised; one puncture penetrated completely through her lip; she also had maggot eggs all over her muzzle. Both eyes had corneal ulcers and sadly, her right eye had to be enucleated (removed).

Maizie had another re-check on her eye yesterday and the ulcerated cornea in that eye is almost healed – yippee! She needs to continue on the two eye meds and will be re-checked in 10 days to see if she needs any further treatment, but that is unlikely at this point. Maizie’s teeth will need some attention since most of them are ground down, and there are some fractures – we think this is due to the fact that this little one was crated day and night and she may have gnawed at the crate trying to get out.

Although Maizie Hope has been through a really bad time recently, she is a happy and playful little girlie. She loves loves LOVES to carry around her little squeaky toy and will bring it on command, drop it and allow her foster mom to throw it again. She is very friendly and loves to be with her people. She is crate-trained and enjoys sleeping in her crate at night. Her house-training is on-going, and she is improving. She is taken out every two hours or so, and will always potty outside, but has occasional accidents in the home. Her foster parents are working with her on this, and she is a smart little girlie and will eventually get it. We have history on Maizie that she has previously lived with cats although there are no cats in her foster home. She was a perfect little angel at the groomer – sweet!

Maizie has a delightful and engaging personality and is very curious about all the sights and sounds she encounters when she goes out in the fenced-in yard in her foster home. It appears she was not allowed outside much since everything appears to be brand new to her and she is enjoying hearing the forest sounds of chirping birds, growling alligators and the chittering of squirrels. She will come on command, is fairly quiet and pretty much ignores the two resident dogs in the home. Although Maizie initially quietly grumbled at the two dogs in the foster home when she has a toy in her mouth, that has mostly stopped and they now happily get along – by ignoring one another lol. Maizie’s foster mom feels she would be fine in the home with another dog who is docile and understands that Maizie likes to think she is the queen of her domain, or she would be happy being an only dog. She loves being with her people and readily gives kisses, loves belly rugs and enjoys sitting on laps.

Maizie has shown that she is resilient and although she has had some neglect in her recent past, she still has HOPE that her future will be much brighter. If Maizie’s story has touched your heart, please consider making a donation to UYR so that we can continue to help other little helpless and homeless dogs like me
