Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Brantley came to AAE with six other equine (Jake, Shay, Lady Rose, Sammy, Conway, and Twitty) after the passing of his elderly owner. Due to owner's health conditions and physical limitations, this herd had not received adequate care for quite some time. Brantley had summer sores in both eyes, and he had not received hoof or dental care for quite a while. We were told he was a trail horse, but had not been ridden for several years. He was very bonded with Shay (the mare that he came in with) to their detriment. Due to different dietary needs and their separation anxiety, they were housed independently, and both became much more manageable.
Shortly after arrival, Bentley's eyes were treated, and he got much needed hoof and dental care.
Training/Experience Update: Brantley is a friendly, kind and social guy. He enjoys grooming and attention. After arrival, he was attached to his buddies and called and paced if a buddy was taken away, but he seemed to remain more calm and relaxed when he was taken out/away for handling. He has been relatively easy to handle on the ground since separation. When first introduced to a saddle, he accepted the saddle well, but with attempts to mount, he was irritated and a bit reactive.
Update: After more transition/settling and some brief groundwork, he has been much more receptive to a saddling and mounting, but he is a bit twitchy and a little nervous. We'll continue to build confidence and evaluate his comfort level before moving on. Brantley has been good with the farrier, and he did not have any issues with loading/transport, but he still needs some work with oral meds and needles with the vet. He has a pretty strong tenancy to pull-back and rear when a needle is involved or when administering oral meds. We are working on softening, confidence building, and acceptance. Brantley is living in a herd environment, and he has not had any separation issues thus far. He hangs out with another gelding, minds his own business, and has been unphased when pulled from the herd or when his gelding pal or others are removed.
AAE has an active environment with daily volunteer activity, dogs, chickens, tractors, a nearby roadway, neighbors with gardeners and noisy gardening equipment, and more. It seems there's always something going on, so the horses get much exposure. The horses with no special needs live in a herd environment; while the older and special needs horses typically live in a stall/paddock environment.
Brantley is current with hoof and dental care, vaccines and deworming, and he has a microchip in place. Brantley is looking for a companion home with potential for future light riding if restarted under saddle. Light riding is anticipated due to his age and lack of any substantial activity over the past several years. He may have more to offer, but we've set low expectations. He is a bit tender-footed and seems he may have thing soles. We just placed shoes on fronts to see if he improves. He will likely need boots or shoes if riding is in his future.
