My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

WE NEED A FOSTER HOME FOR NINA SOMEWHERE IN THE NE. She can be transported.

Rooney is a 1-year old, female, 45 lb, spayed, housebroken, collie mix (62% collie, 22.5% lab, 12% pitbull, 2.9% boxer), who is up to date on all of her vaccinations. Rooney is an independent, high-energy dog who enjoys hunting in the woods, catching flies in the air, paddle boarding, swimming, and agility courses. She is a fast learner and is highly motivated by treats. She knows sit, stay, wait, come, lay down, spin, back-up, paw, and even does a magic trick! She is a dog who needs a lot of mental stimulation as well as physical exercise daily, and does well when she has a job to do. Rooney would be best in a foster home with a yard because she loves being outside in the sunshine. Rooney enjoys chasing and being chased by other dogs, but is just as happy sniffing and hunting on her own. She loves wresting with big dogs and she is really strong and tough. She does well with kids, and is very laid back with being picked up, being held on her back, and being played with. Because of her strong prey drive, she would not do well in a home with cats or birds.

Rooney needs a stern handler because she can be stubborn and demanding. Her challenges include: leash walking, over-excitement when meeting another dog on leash only, and demanding attention by barking. She has no attack or bite history. She is a dorky girl who likes to see what she can get away with, snuggle on the couch, and chew on bully sticks. Because of her high prey drive, I use an e-collar to enforce recall and it works very well. She naturally checks in with me on hikes, but to be safe I keep it on when we hike. To help with leash walking I use a gentle lead (which she puts up with but doesn't like). To strengthen impulse control I practice focusing on me with other dogs around, sitting and waiting, and crate time for relaxation. Rooney needs a home with a fenced-in yard. She has completed adult training levels 1 & 2 through Unleashed Positive Dog Training, and Agility level 1 through MSCPA training.
