Their adoption process

Our $95 adoption fee helps cover the essential care your new Friend For Life receives before heading home, including vaccinations, testing, a health check, and age-appropriate spay/neuter. All cats and dogs are microchipped, and dogs receive heartworm prevention. If heartworm treatment is needed, we provide that too!

Our adopters must be 21, have ID and must undergo an interview, fill out an application and sign contracts related to commitments for the care of the animals. We will check veterinary references and landlord information.

No animals may be adopted as gifts and and all members of the caretaking family must be in agreement about the adoption.

Should an adoption not work out we require the animal to be returned to Friends For Life.

Our dog adoption application may be filled out online at: http://nokill1.org/adopt/adoptable-dogs.
Our cat adoption application may be filled out online at: http://nokill1.org/adopt/adoptable-cats.

Adoption steps

  1. Submit Application
Complete an adoption application so we can learn more about you and your household. Applications are active for 6 months.
  2. Interview
Chat with our adoption team about your lifestyle, expectations, and the pet you're interested in.
  3. Approve Application
Once everything checks out, we'll let you know that your application has been approved. You'll work with our team for matchmaking magic!
  4. Take the Pet Home
Take your potential new pet home for a week-long sleepover to see if you’re the right match. Some pets may have additional requirements.
  5. Sign Adoption Contract
Complete your adoption contract and officially make your new pet a Friend For Life. Technically, they already are home. Now it's official!

We are currently located in the Historic Heights. Our shelter looks more like a gallery than a shelter! Incredible photography is displayed in our lobby. Care has been taken with every detail of the building. We are bringing in 100% outside fresh air and turning over the air in each space completely 15 times an hour. We have made certain that sunlight reaches every animal (and staff) workspace and even engaged a professional acoustician from the beginning to ensure that we manage the sound for everyone's comfort. We have cageless cat rooms with 19-foot ceilings and climbers everywhere to keep the kitties happy and healthy. We have a 'real life' dog living area set up for the dogs. Our shelter is unlike any you've ever experienced! You have to see it to believe it!

We need adoption counselors, docents and animal "smoochers" to keep everyone feeling loved. We also need, welcome and swoon over our foster parents!

Our volunteers and foster parents are like gold to us. Please consider joining this energetic and positive group! If you'd like to volunteer, please just email us below or drop by!

Come by and visit! Even if you are not adopting an animal, we have well-trained staff to answer pet related questions, a wealth of training, medical and behavioral information and a fun atmosphere to just drop in and get your fix of animal love!

As always, Friends For Life is a No Kill organization.

More about this shelter

We’re Friends For Life, a Houston-based nonprofit animal shelter with a pretty simple belief: every animal matters.

Since 2002, we’ve been working to change the way our community thinks about homeless animals and what it means to be “adoptable.” We rescue, rehabilitate, and find homes for cats and dogs who might otherwise be overlooked because of their age, breed, medical needs, behavior, or simply because they didn’t fit someone else’s idea of the perfect pet.

In fact, many of the animals who come to Friends For Life have been rejected elsewhere as “unadoptable.” We don’t believe that label tells the whole story. With the right medical care, behavior support, enrichment, training, and a little time, animals can surprise you.

What We Do

We provide animals in our care with the medical attention, behavioral support, enrichment, and individualized care they need to become happy, healthy companions. We also offer training and behavior support to help adopters and their new pets build a successful life together.

But our work doesn’t stop at the shelter. We believe the best way to save lives is to address the reasons animals end up in shelters in the first place. Through community programs, education, resources, and support for people and their pets, we work toward a future where fewer animals need shelters at all.

Why We Do It

Because we don't think an animal's worth should be determined by a number on a scale, a breed label, a gray muzzle, a medical diagnosis, or a bad day.

We believe “unadoptable” is a label we can change.

So whether you're here to adopt, foster, volunteer, or simply find out more about the animals in your community, you're part of something bigger: helping create a world where every animal has a chance to be someone's Friend For Life.

Every animal matters. And together, we can change everything.
