Letter from Periwinkles foster family

Precious little Periwinkle....

We have now been fostering Periwinkle for 4 months, and she has improved by leaps and bounds!
She is most definitely ready to move on to her forever home.
She will ALWAYS require the close companionship of another dog. She needs that canine comfort that humans simply can't offer.

When she first arrived (pregnant) it would be very accurate to describe her as feral.
Coming from a terrible hoarding/backyard breeding situation- she had never experienced touch, petting, interaction with humans, or any kind of normal pet/home life. Her only companions were dogs.

She has now learned all about life with a family and other pets...which includes being touched and loved by people.

-Peri is fantastic with our cat.
They coexist beautifully, laying side by side on the couch frequently. She and the cat have become playmates! She chases him and then stops, trying to entice him to chase her. They do a 'pop goes the weasel' game where he sits on a chair and Peri pops up over and over again for him to swat at her (with claws in).

-Peri is an AMAZING doggie companion if you have a lonely dog. She has not exhibited a single sign of food aggression, and is happiest when her and our Shitzu/Poodle are cuddled together on the couch with the cat and human family (can we say puppy pile???)

-Peri has full run of our house, but chooses to sleep nuzzled between myself and my husband in our bed. If dogs in the bed isn't your thing, that's okay too. I'm sure she will be happy to nuzzle up for the night with your pooch on a doggy bed or sofa.

-PETTING & TOUCHING:
This has been the biggest obstacle to overcome and she has made HUGE PROGRESS!
Peri now happily accepts petting and touching when the house is calm and relaxed. Her most affectionate and 'touchy' times are in the early morning and late evening. During the day she is much more on guard and cautious. Even when she's not in the mood to be pet, she really loves to be close enough to touch her people and steal your body heat.

*Picking her up is something she finds extremely unsettling. In situations where I need to handle her such as putting on a harness, leash, doggie clothes, vet visits... The most effective way to do this is to coax her into the crate, close the door, give her a minute to settle, and then slowly and gently reach in to get a hold if her. This is such a completely foreign feeling for her to be vulnerable in a human's arms and hands so it's very scary for her.

-LEASHING/CAR RIDES/TRANSPORTATION:
We have harnessed and leash walked Peri 3 times now! It is an extremely new and very strange sensation for her. I found the very best success is to walk her in a remote area with no traffic, or at a time of day when your neighborhood has little to no activity. Traffic, people, neighborhood sounds spook her, and the worst possible thing would be for her to wriggle out of the harness and get loose.
She is very much a FLIGHT RISK.
Her companion dog absolutely must accompany her for walking/transportation...basically she and your current dog will have to be constant companions for her to feel safe and relaxed.
The method I have most used for transportation and car rides with Peri is the small plastic crate. I coax her into the crate, close the door, carry it out to the car, and then open the crate once the car doors are closed so that she can ride shotgun with our Shitzu/Poodle .

Periwinkle has only been with us for 4 months, which is a short time compared to a lifetime she will spend with her forever family. I have absolutely no doubts at all that in her forever home she will blossom and let down her guards.

Time, patience, and dedication are the keys for her greatest success and happiness.
