Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Before calling about this dog, please read our adoption requirements at http://gsrne.org/requirements-for-adopting-from-gsrne
Packer just turned one on March 9th and had been returned to the shelter after just two days. No one had taken the time to teach him anything, so he didn’t know what was acceptable and what wasn’t; he was confused and would charge the gate to his kennel run if a stranger stopped to stare at him.
To help him settle down and be able to learn how to behave, we housed him with a trainer who understands German Shepherds and has good success preparing them for a home of their own. Unlike a kennel environment, the trainer houses the dogs on his farm and has them around other dogs as well as various farm animals. We’ve seen videos of Packer going on Pack Walks with other dogs off leash, with goats, ducks, chickens and even a mini-horse. He’s comfortable with them all, now, and especially likes the trainer’s teenage daughters.
Packer does need a calm, confident and experienced leader; he will do best with another dog in the home. He does not respond well to a harsh correction and doesn’t need that. He will have to continue with obedience training with his adopter; he knows what to do, and the classes help with bonding and communication.
If you would enjoy having a smart, active boy and are experienced with this type of German Shepherd, please ask us about Packer!
