My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I’m Chika, and I’m one of those AARBs (Amazing Assortment of Retired Beagles) you may have heard about. I’m a sweet older lady, 11 and a half years old to be precise, and on the smaller side (13 inches high, 22 pounds). I generally want to be where my people are, either on the couch with them or sleeping on a bed nearby. (Oh, and don’t be surprised, I may be small but I have a BIG snore!). I love my crate, and will happily sleep there overnight and when my people go out. I’m pretty quiet most of the time, really only barking when there might be food involved. If I didn’t do that, how would you know I was a beagle, right? At least my foster dads say I have a good singing voice.

I came to Midwest BREW from South Bend, Indiana, where my family kept me out in the yard too much. I still like to wander in the yard, but I’d far rather stay inside with you. I’m not at all shy with people—in fact, everyone I’ve met says I’m just adorable. I do need to have another dog around, just to let me know I’m doing the right things. I love my foster sister, and even got a bit zoomy with her, chasing around the yard and the house. It was fun! I walk well on a leash, but haven’t figured out I could potty while out on those walks. As far as I’m concerned, the yard is for potty and the walks are for SNIFFING. (Foster dad note—Chika is housetrained. She prefers to follow our other dog down the stairs and into the yard, but she will ask to go out on her own when nature calls. Her signals are a bit subtle, though, so it helps to take her out several times during the day. She took a few weeks to establish her preferred potty spots.)

My foster home has one of those cat things, and except for sticking my nose in her face once, I’ve left her alone. Getting hissed at probably helped me figure that out quickly. You don’t want to leave the cat food accessible because of that beagle/food thing, but I know enough not to bother the cat.

I don’t really understand dog toys, nor do I try to make toys out of your stuff. I’m learning some commands, especially “sit” and “come here”, but I think you’ll have to work with me more on that. Just be patient with me and I’ll get there. I ride well tethered or crated in the car, not fussing at all, but I do get a bit urpy sometimes. I’ll come to you with some Cerenia to help me not have to deal with that.

I’m looking for a family with another beagle and a soft bed. If you’d like to meet me, please contact Midwest BREW to talk to my foster family.

NOTE: Dog may be located in any of our six volunteer states (WI, IL, IN, OH, PA, MI).
