My story

Scarlett is an 8 year old American Bulldog mix. Scarlett is a high energy dog who is up for just about anything. She is very smart and well versed in all of the basic obedience commands & skills. She is a very independent girl and she can be a handful sometimes. She will need a firm but fair owner that is patient and knowledgeable of the American Bulldog or similar breed. Scarlett is a favorite of many of our volunteers. She loves to hang out with them for butt scratches. Scarlett loves her walks but can get overly excited when a rabbit or another dog is close by.

One of our volunteers takes Scarlett home with her for visits a couple of times a week. She loves the visits! Scarlett likes to hang out on the back porch and watch to see what might be going on in the park behind the house. She also likes to roll around in the yard. If it's a chilly day, she will lay in the living room while the humans are watching TV. She likes her toys and playing tug. She is a good girl!

The ideal home for Scarlett includes the following:

fenced yard with direct access to the yard from the house

no other pets

children no younger than teenagers

a quiet/calm environment

We know the perfect home is out there for our sweet Scarlett and she so deserves it. If you think yours is the one, please fill out an application so we can learn more about you and your home. If we feel it is a good fit, we will contact you to set up a time to meet her.

Their adoption process

1.

Meet the Pet

We recommend that potential adopters come to our Safe Place shelter on any Saturday, between 10am and 2pm, to meet our resident dogs.

2.

Submit Application

Potential adopters/fosters over 21 may submit an application online, via snailmail, or in person.

3.

Approve Application

If your application (with references) is approved, you will be notified. We are all volunteers so please be patient with us.

4.

Home Check

If you already have other animals, an additional off-site meet & greet may be required to ensure compatibility.

5.

Sign Adoption Contract

The adoption fee (based upon the dog's age) must be paid when the adoption contract is signed.

6.

Take the Pet Home

You will be asked to provide our Adoption Committee with updates regarding how your new family member is adapting.

Additional adoption info

Both Adopters and Fosters are required to complete an application that includes two personal references and a vet reference (if applicable). When reference checks are complete, a home visit will be scheduled for applicants deemed a feasible potential match.

Our adoption fees are age-based; $150 for senior dogs (7 years and older); $175 for dogs 1-6 years; $200 for dogs under 1 year of age.

If you are 65 years or older, the adoption fee is waived when you adopt a senior dog. All Dogs Forever dogs are vaccinated against rabies and distemper/parvo, tested for heartworm and Lyme disease, and are microchipped. They are on heartworm preventative.

All Dogs Forever dogs are spayed or neutered prior to adoption.

More about this shelter

Dogs Forever Safe Place provides refuge for homeless dogs, where they receive loving care, free of fear and free of the threat of being euthanized. This is their sanctuary until Dogs Forever places them with a reputable rescue, a no-kill shelter or a forever family.

Many of the dogs residing at Safe Place come from kill shelters where they were at risk of being euthanized or from other Iowa counties that have no animal shelter.
