My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet sweet Maia! Maia is approximately 2.5 years old as of 5/20/20 & is approximately 60lbs. Maia is also your typical Am. Staffie!!! All love, all loyalty, all family. Maia came to us through the West Haven Animal Shelter (WHAS). She was found by the Animal Control Officers (ACOs) at WHAS back in October 2019 in West Haven. Her body had been beaten up pretty badly with all kinds of sores, she was emaciated & she had bite wounds on her neck. Unfortunately, those bite wounds resulted in her having a ruptured salivary gland. When Green Fur Kidz dog rescue found out about Maia & her need to have the very expensive surgery & lots of rehab care afterwards, we stepped up to raise funds to help Maia out. She had her surgery in February & had some complications & then we realized she had most likely allergies so we did the extensive allergy testing panels at Orange Veterinary Hospital where she is a patient. It turns out that Maia does not have food allergies but she does have allergies to storage mites, which makes feeding Maia a dry food diet (which most families feed) difficult. Right now, Maia is on a raw kibble diet by Stella & Chewy's. Hopefully the raw kibble diet will be the answer & we won't have to switch her to an all raw diet. We will update her profile as time goes on as soon as we know if the raw kibble is ok for her. Any potential adopters must know that Maia's storage mite allergy is long term, likely for life so it will cost extra money to feed her a better quality food. In addition, because of Maia's previous misfortune of not being well cared for by whomever had owned her, her foster family is asking for a fenced in yard so that will be an additional expense. Please read below what Maia's foster mom has to say about Maia:

"My sweet, sweet snuggley girl Maia is searching for her furever family & we know that the perfect fit is out there right now looking for her! When I look into her sweet, soulful eyes my heart just completely melts into a puddle. She is my constant companion, always on my feet wherever I am. She is at my heels when we walk around the house & in the yard. She even prefers to sleep on my feet than in her comfy doggie bed! She is housetrained (only 1 accident the first week she came to us for fostering & it was because we missed her sitting at the door & she was on medicine that made her have to use the potty more often so it was our fault). She is so very smart & loves to engage with her people. She knows paw, hi-5, sit, down & speak! She loves to eat but can be fussy at first with food until she sees you eat it. Currently Maia is on Stella & Chewy's raw kibble blend & so whomever adopts her needs to know she will always have to be on a premium diet due to her storage mite allergies. She may have to go on an all raw diet but we are still testing to see if the raw kibble blend will be sufficient enough to avoid storage mites. In addition, I would really like her furever family to carry pet insurance as I want to make sure that should she ever need something extraordinary in terms of vet care that she will get it. She is loving & loyal & just wants to be by your side. Miss Maia is a big, muscular girl that can look a little intimidating so potential adopters must be ready to combat any type of breed prejudice since she is part of the bully breed family. She is also strong on leash & while we don't walk her much on a leash because our yard is fenced in, it is worth mentioning because we feel she needs to have her own fenced in yard not only because of this but also because she really loves to run & play fetch & we want her to be protected at all times. Maia has been exposed to parakeets in our home & she is curious & just sits & watches them... it's actually quite sweet. We haven't let them loose while Maia is around though because we did see her chase a bird (but was easily corrected) in our yard. We do have a small 20lb angry little senior french bulldog who is cranky & quirky. Maia really wants to be his friend & play but he is just not having any of it & tries to nip her so we don't know how Maia truly is with other dogs as we don't have one that is friendly to other dogs. I would say that she is friendly & social with dogs & just wants to play... however, I would really like her to be an only child & be spoiled completely rotten because she so deserves it. We have trained her not to jump up on furniture nor put paws on the countertops. She still really wants to sit on the sofa with us but we know not all families like this so we always train our foster pups not to sit on furniture... but it's my hope that her furever family will allow her to be on the furniture & snuggle with them! Maia is crate trained but honestly, I do not want her to have to be in a crate for very long. Right now she only sleeps in the crate at night & when we are not home. If Maia were my dog & I didn't have my angry little frenchie who already sleeps in my bed, I would so snuggle Maia every night! She is just that mushey!!! Something worthy of mention is that when she comes out of her crate in the morning, she is like a baby rhino making way to the door & frankly, I feel like a rodeo clown trying to get her out to go potty. I think this behavior would not exist if we didn't crate her overnight so that's another reason why I really don't want her to be crated. I'm looking for a family that's mostly home & because of Maia's size & her knack of being at your heels & right at your side constantly wanting to touch you, I am looking for a family with much older kids like say over 10 years of age & probably dog savvy. Also because when Maia plays in the yard with a game of fetch she can jump up or even try to jump up in your lap if you are sitting down because she gets so excited. Maia is one of the sweetest, most loving, easiest dogs I have ever fostered truth be told. I really want her to have the very best happily furever after because she really deserves it!"
