My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

"Hachi" is an approx 125-lb, 6½-yo neutered male GSD who is a sweet, mellow, gentle giant! (He really is a very large dog.) He’s very affectionate and loves to be handled. Hachi is very sensitive and loyal. His foster caretaker's words say it all: "He has been such a loving addition to our home....we love having him around!"

Hachi is great with all the people he meets. The guy in the hat “dancing” with Hachi in one of the pictures here was a visitor to his foster caretaker’s house—Hachi is just the kind of dog to dance with strangers! He doesn’t bark much but when he does, it’s a thunderous bark so he would likely scare off intruders just w/ his voice. Hachi is good with young children for the most part. Hachi’s former owner said that sometimes Hachi would bark at his nephews & nieces until they touched Hachi, then he was fine with them.

Hachi was fine w/ the dogs he lived with in his two former homes (including GSRSV’s rescue ranch). He’s more or less indifferent to other dogs, though, and much more focused on people.

Hachi has never been around cats so I will only consider a home WITHOUT cats for him.

Though Hachi was raised outdoors from the time he was a young puppy, he is housetrained and recently made the successful transition to a house dog! He is still learning some inside manners such as leaving the kitchen garbage alone and staying off furniture, but has not had a single “accident” since he came to his foster home on Oct 28.

Hachi never received any formal obedience training, but is very well-behaved nonetheless. He does obey the “sit” and “shake” commands. He lies quietly near his primary foster caretaker Patty when she works from home.

Hachi loves to go for walks and though he gets very excited at first, he’s very calm on leash. Hachi is only good for a few blocks as he’s still building up his stamina. He was very overweight when GSRSV rescued him in late September, and didn’t do much walking or running at the rescue ranch. Hachi’s hips are fine, though, which he demonstrates by rearing up on his hind legs when he gets excited.

Hachi has a very slow metabolism and eats and drinks very little for a dog his size. Though Hachi has likely lost about 10 lbs since GSRSV took him in, I’d recommend that whoever adopts him continue him on a weight loss program until he’s down to about 115-120 lbs.

Hachi enjoys car rides and is a polite passenger. He likes to play tug-of-war with rope toys. He’s not much of a fan of water.

Hachi was raised by a family from Stockton from the time he was just a few weeks old. Sadly, financial hardship forced them to give up Hachi. They were just about to bring Hachi to the Stockton shelter when GSRSV offered to take him in.

Hachi is presently in a foster home in Davis. His adoption fee is $210.
