My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Regal and delightful and a bit spicy, Puga is a beautiful girl with plenty of potential for the right person. She can be sweet and likes a nice chest scratch, but chances are she won't seek out contact and bond right away. She takes her time with getting to know you while in the meantime, her main focus is her environment. She is ultra aware and alert to her environment and for those familiar with German Shepherds, this is not highly unusual. She will mostly ignore the humans in her surroundings, especially strangers, so it will be important for her to find someone who will have the patience and skills to crack through her somewhat steely exterior.

German Shepherds are described as having a: “certain aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships” and this would describe Puga, as would the other characteristics attributed to the breed: loyalty, courage, confidence and the ability to learn commands for many tasks.

Puga would do best with someone who has some dog handling experience, and preferably knows the breed. She will need to continue her work on social skills, leash walking and learning to relax and trust her person.

She likes her toys, but doesn't need to have them to survive (like our Search Dogs in training) and this is one of the reasons she did not continue in our program. She did not have the focus and drive needed to maintain her interest in the work.

Once upon a time, she was a stray with a fractured leg, picked up by a last chance rescue group, but those days are long behind this beautiful girl as she blossoms and grows into a confident, healthy and nice new best friend.

Give this girl a chance and you might find yourself in the midst of royalty. Queen Puga, anyone?
