My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

2/28/2020

Hi there, I’m Leonard!

I am an older gentleman, probably around 10 or 11 years old, 50 pounds and most likely a Shepherd mix. I am mostly potty trained and have had just a few accidents at my foster home. I’m good on a leash and like most dogs but as an older man I need some space and rest sometimes too. I’ll let my dog friends and humans know when I’m tired of playing and need a nap! I was found in Mexico in a tiny crate and was really just skin and bones and couldn’t get up by myself so the amazing people at the Cantu Foundation rushed me to the vet and I made a full recovery!

I am a mellow and affectionate old man who has a lot of life left! My foster mom says my behavior is fantastic - not destructive, sleep all night, good on a walk, have done well when left home alone for short periods (have not tested more than 2 hours), and I’m just happy to be in a safe, quiet home. I am low maintenance and like to go on my walks to sniff around but have generally low exercise needs. We've been walking about a 0.5-1 mile in the morning and a shorter walk in the evening. I have done well off-leash in controlled areas and stick close to my humans. I haven’t had much real training so I definitely wander sometimes and am not always aware of voice-commands and sometimes my hearing isn't great. I LOVE coming home and getting into my bed. I will take off running to get to the front door when we round the corner to come back home from a walk. I spend most of the day in my bed and wag my tail for pets when you walk by! I am not, however, good at sharing my bed with other dogs and prefer my space.

I will do best in a home that does not have too rigid rules or expectations and can be patient with me. I can probably have dog siblings but they shouldn’t be too high energy because I need my rest and I need to be able to set my own boundaries. I would also do well in a home without young kids, but older kids would be good! I need a quiet home where I can sleep without too much going on. A good yard where I can poke around in the grass and bushes, or someone who will take me somewhere similar on walks would be perfection. I would probably be okay left alone for chunks of the day as long as I get out for a little exercise beforehand. My adoption fee is $150 and that includes spaying/neutering and vetting care.
