My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

My name is Velma, and I'm a black and tan coonhound.  I'm a perfect sized lady, around 65 pounds, but I'm sure I carry most of my weight in my nice floppy ears!

I like to sunbathe outdoors, and I would love a home with a fenced in yard that I can patrol and catch all sorts of good sniffs.  I am learning to love toys, especially soft toys that I can kill and find the squeakers! I LOVE walks, so much so that I get excited and bark while I walk...it's pretty cute.

I might be able to share a home with other laid back dogs my size but I am very much a resource guarder so I need an owner who is comfortable and familiar with this behavior. I have done dog playgroups outside and done great. So if you have a medium to large size dog already (nothing under 30 pounds), let me meet them and see how we get along.  I have been known to be protective of my food and water bowl in a home setting, so I'd prefer an owner who can give me my own safe space like a nice big kennel to eat in. I do take some daily medicines, and I'll need these long term, and you should know that I do have a few allergies that I require monthly injections for - including peanut butter! I don't mind kids, but I don't want to live with them at this time so adults only in my new home please, especially if they like to go for walks!

Velma's adoption fee is $250 and includes her spay, microchip and current vaccinations PLUS a free obedience course at Cedar Run in Hiawatha. Last Hope requires that all animals be kept as indoor pets only, be altered and current on vaccinations.  Our adoption process includes reference and background checks, a home visit and a vet check.
