My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This dog is being fostered in Dallas TX and must be adopted within the Dallas, North Central Texas or the southern Oklahoma area.

NAME: Penny
GENDER: Female (Spayed)
AGE: About 5 years
WEIGHT: About 9 pounds
DOGS/CATS: Gets along with other small dogs, Gets along with cats
CHILDREN: All adult home or home with older, mature children (14 and older)

Meet Penny. Penny is a sweet girl, looking for a loving home to grow up in. Penny also has special medical needs and we are searching for an experienced family to give her a safe and healthy home.

Penny was found running lost in Carrollton (a Dallas suburb). She had no collar, no tags and no microchip. Her owners never stepped forward to claim her. Penny spent the next month at The Colony Animal Shelter. She was frightened and just wanted to stay in the back of her cage area, alone. The shelter staff was very understanding – who wouldn’t be nervous being around all those barking dogs! They reached out to CRT to see if we would bring Penny into our program and help her get ready for a forever home. We are so happy we said “yes” – she has been a delight.

Penny has a mellow, laid back personality. Penny gets along well with the other small dogs in her foster home. She immediately fit into the pack in her foster home. She has a perfect lady-like personality, very polite. She enjoys being in the same area as other dogs, but prefers her own soft dog bed and will supervise the activity! Penny also gets along with cats. She is past the “playing” stage so does not play much with other dogs or with toys. She enjoys going outside and laying in the sun. And she enjoys hanging around the other dogs to make sure she does not miss any adventures. Note that Penny is afraid of larger dogs and would not be a good fit in a home with dogs over 10 pounds.

Penny loves her people. She loves being in the same room as her family. She loves to get in your lap and cuddle. Her fosters say that it is as if this is her whole purpose in life – to cuddle with you and make you happy! She loves to press her body into yours as she wants to be as close to you as possible. It is as if she is almost hugging you. When you come home from errands, she gives you an adorable “I missed you so much” look! And kisses – well, we hope you like kisses as she has an unlimited amount to share with you.

Penny is very quiet and makes a great home office buddy. Penny enjoys snuggling in a doggie bed in your office while you are working on emails and participating in conference calls. She would be perfect for a work-at-home family or a retired family. Penny is a bit shy when she meets new people, but warms up fairly quickly. She does exhibit anxiety and cries when her family leaves home to run errands, so we do not recommend an apartment setting. We highly recommend a family that is home a great deal of time so that she will feel comfortable and relaxed.

Penny is about 5 years old. She weighs about 9 pounds. Penny is mostly white with an adorable tan mask. She has an amazing curly tail.

Important health note: In January, Penny began to exhibit signs of epilepsy. She has had three seizures, about a month apart. Each has lasted about 1 – 2 minutes. Our vet has prescribed phenobarbital, a low cost medicine (about $15 a month) to help control her seizures. Our vet told us that dogs with an epilepsy condition often develop this right around Penny’s age. They also told us that these dogs can live for long periods of time with the proper medicine and a healthy diet. We are looking for a forever family for Penny that is familiar with this medical condition, and who will be committed to keeping her on track with medicine and care.

The perfect home for Penny would be one with moderate energy. We believe she would do well as an only dog (as long as she got lots of attention) or would fit into a pack. She is fine with children (recommend mature children 14 and older). Note: Penny can be a bit of an escape artist. We don’t think she is trying to run, but it is as if she is looking for adventure! For that reason, her forever home must have a secure fence and a secure area around their front door.

Penny is very smart. She taught herself how to use the doggy door in her foster home the first day she was there. She is potty trained. She is also crate trained, but prefers to sleep with her humans at night.

Penny is being fostered in the DFW (Texas) area. If this sweet girl sounds like the right fit for your home, our CRT adoption form can be found at: http://www.chihuahua-rescue.com/adoption-application/

Penny is spayed, micro chipped, up-to-date on shots, HW negative and on heartworm prevention. She is ready to join a loving family – could that family be yours?

This dog is a CRT rescue. Reference checks, adoption contract and $324.75 adoption donation required ($300 adoption donation and $24.75 Texas Sales Tax). Note: as of 1-1-20, the Texas State Comptroller office is requiring all rescue groups to collect sales tax on adoptions, even though we are all 501c3. We are all fighting this, but for now, have been told it is non-negotiable.

As part of our mission to reduce the number of unwanted and sick dogs, we require that all current pets are spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations and taking heart worm prevention. Applications will not be considered if one or more of these requirements are not met.

After filling out an adoption application (found at http://www.chihuahua-rescue.com/adoption-application/), please email DFWCoordinator@chihuahua-rescue.com if you are interested in this dog. Please be sure to read about our adoption process and then fill out an adoption application before emailing the contact person.
