* SPECIAL NEEDS FOSTER* This dog has medical issues and is therefore considered a special needs foster. Dustin is NOT available for general adoption as we feel it best to let him live out his life in the caring hands of his foster family unless someone who is able to handle his special needs (mostly pooping assistance) applies for him. Due to his hernia he sometimes struggles to go #2 and therefore requires some squeeze assistance...if you think you can do that then feel free to apply!!

Dustin Dingo is a dachshund/beagle mix who is approximately 12-14 years old & a refined old gentleman.  He likes to take his time to smell the roses!  He loves cuddling and taking afternoon naps on the sofa!  Dustin is good with other dogs and loves to walk around his surroundings!  He is currently being cage trained and is doing well!  He also is learning to potty outdoors, but must wear a diaper inside to prevent accidents.  He has a lot of anxiety but his foster family is working with him and he is slowly feeling more comfortable with others and starting to show affection! Dustin speaks to his foster family by grunting & barking for attention.  After all he is mostly doxie & we all know they demand to be the center of our universe.

DARE sprung Dustin from the shelter because he was in dire need of lots of medical attention which the shelter was not able to handle and we could not turn our back on this sweet fellow.  We had the vet check him all over particularly regarding his renal hernia. The vet does not recommend surgery for it because at his age it would be difficult for him to recover. Dustin also has epilepsy which is being controlled with medication.  Plus he recently had a dental, so his breath is nice and fresh.  At his age, he has the usual diminished sight & hearing.  Even with all this Dustin remains to be a very sweet boy.

Dustin is a sweet special needs little guy & is NOT available for general adoption.  If you are interested in helping with the care of Dustin please consider making a donation & listing his name on it.  If you think you can be his forever home and handle his special needs please apply with his name on your application.

Thank you to all of our wonderful supporters who enable us to take on the special needs dogs like Dustin! ♥

Even if you do not see a dog that matches what you're looking for, you may fill out a no obligation application and we will work to find a match for you.

We receive dogs into foster care frequently, so it is impossible to have every available or soon-to-be-available dog on the website.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

The first step towards adopting your new pet is filling out the adoption application (the link to which you will find below.)

Complete it to the best of your ability. The dachshund you adopt will become a member of your family. It is important that everyone in your residence understands a rescue will need the love, patience, and guidance of every member of the family. Our application will ask you questions about persons in your residence, your living environment, your past and current experiences with pets, and the qualities you are looking for in your new pet.

It also asks you to provide personal references, and a veterinary reference if you are a current or former pet owner, to enable us to more clearly ascertain your ability to be a responsible, compassionate, and humane pet owner.

Dachshunds vary greatly in temperament, personality, and activity levels. Not everyone's lifestyle is the same. We ask questions not to pry, but to help us find the right dog for your home and family. So, please be truthful when filling our your application. The more honest you are with your answers, the better we are able to seek the dog of your dreams. If you have seen a dachshund on our website that interests you, please include its name on your application, and we will give the match serious consideration. If you don't see your "dream dog" at this time, or if the dachshund of your choice has already been adopted, don't be discouraged. Submit your application for adoption anyway. On average there are over 45 dogs in DARE's foster care program at any one time undergoing physical and emotional evaluations prior to presentation on our website. As these dogs are readied for permanent placement, our members will search all on-file applications first before looking elsewhere for suitable owners. Often times dachshunds are matched up with suitable applicants without ever be listed on the website.

Upon receipt of your application, a DARE member will be assigned to work with you. Your rep will be available to you to answer any questions you may have, and will be responsible for calling or writing to your references and setting up your home visit.

At times, DARE may ask the assistance of another rescue group in performing the home visit, if we do not have a DARE member residing near your area. Upon satisfactory completion of your reference checks and home visit, you will be approved to adopt!

LONG DISTANCE ADOPTIONS
While we seek to minimize the amount of travel required to place a dog in a permanent home, a dog's breed, age, and temperament are the primary considerations given when seeking a suitable dachshund or dachshund mix for an applicant. DARE members and volunteers will at times offer assistance in transporting a rescued dog to its new permanent home when given ample notice and if the distance to be traveled is within reason. However, it is not always possible to find a suitable pet in your local area. In such circumstances, you may wish to consider a long distance adoption, if available, or keep your application on file to await a new arrival.
Long distance adoptions are offered only upon the recommendation and discretion of the DARE member and/or foster volunteer responsible for the daily care and well being of the dog in their care. Not all dogs able to handle the stress of a long distance transports. We understand this policy may be frustrating to an applicant, but the dog's well being must come first. The member or volunteer who lives and cares for the dog on a daily basis must be accorded the right to do what they believe is in the best interest of the dog.

ADOPTION FEES
Adoption fees as of 6/1/03 are as follows:

$250 for dogs 3 and under.
$225 for dogs 4 - 7 years.
$175 for dachshund mixes less than 8 years old.
$150 for dogs 8 -13, including dachshund mixes, or special-needs dogs.
$100 for dogs over 14 yrs of age.

Please note: if you are adopting your dachshund long distance, aside from the adoption fee, you will also be responsible for all common carrier transport costs to get the dog to you. In addition, an Adoption Contract must be completed and signed, and the appropriate fees paid, before transport will commence.

Please go to http://www.daretorescue.com/adoptForm.php to fill out the adoption application. Thank you for your interest in rescuing a dachshund in need.
