My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Baxter, an adorable 10 year old, 13 pound Yorkie boy being fostered in Liberty Hill, TX. Due to COVID concerns, only Texas applicants will be considered.

Bio Update 3/17/21 - BAXTER STILL NEEDS YOUR DONATIONS, LOVE, AND PRAYERS!

We are getting ready for Baxter's upcoming surgery (2nd attempt), on April 26th, to repair his palatal oronasal fistula. Basically, Baxter has a hole in the roof of his mouth, leading into the sinus cavity, that the vet believes was caused by trauma. Baxter is such a healthy and happy guy outside of this issue and is eager to find his furever home!

Baxter is also on the mend from a nasty UTI, with some broad spectrum antibiotics and an amazing cranberry supplement. Overall, this little LOVEBUG is doing fantastic and thriving with the feeding techniques we have mastered! We are continuing to cut up his wet food into little squares, and hand feeding him. With this approach, we are able to push past the hole in his upper palate and he swallows the wet food with almost no aspiration. He still aspirates a lot when he drinks water, which prevents him from fully hydrating. To combat this, he gets a few syringes of Pedialyte throughout the day, as well as multiple watering stations, throughout his foster home, with ice cubes to entice this sweet angel to drink more frequently.

Baxter has been a trooper throughout all of his additional care, because I think he realizes life is so much better when you feel better!! After a short adjustment, Baxter has become an amazing cuddler. Baxter walks well on a leash, takes pills with ease, enjoys bathing (including blueberry facials), and post bath blow drying! Baxter has even begun to line up with his foster brothers for brushing and to have his eyes and mouth wiped daily.

Per the vets direction, Baxter is on a Probiotic (FortiFlora) for gut health, Canine Fish oil (Omegas to help with a healthy heart, skin and coat, brain & joint function), as well as Glucosamine with Chondroitin to keep his strutt perfect, because Baxter is a very active little guy and he has places to go!! Please note that these are not necessary supplements, but with neglect and age, they can certainly help him maintain and even improve his overall health!

Baxter will soon be ready for his furever, so please fill out an application if you would like to be considered or contact his foster parents with any questions - uyr.yorkies4life@gmail.com.

BIO UPDATE: 01/25/21. Baxter had surgery last week for his neuter and to fix the hole in the roof of his mouth. The vet has no idea how it happened, however it is definitely from an injury. The vet performed a skin graft, however 3 days later Baxter somehow managed to rip the stitches and the hole is back. He has a consultation with a specialist on February 2, where they'll tell us what can be done. He's eating well, now that the foster mom has found a thick pate he can just swallow that doesn't go into his sinuses. He's a happy boy who loves sleeping in foster mom and dad's bed, and demands belly rubs in the morning upon waking up. Potty training is going well, and he even has asked to go outside a few times.

Baxter would be happy in a home as an only dog, or small dogs (he gets along with those fine). Cats and larger dogs we would not recommend. He is also great with kids. Foster mom will update more after his consultation!
INITIAL BIO. 12/08/20. Howdy! My name is Baxter. Nice to meet you! I had been residing in a shelter in North Texas, where I was taken as I was roaming the streets. No one has come to get me though, so the nice folks at UYR took me in! My foster mom just got me groomed and oh my gosh do I feel and look better! Like, is there a Tinder for dogs? (Oh, won't need that as they're getting me neutered next week anyway....oh well). My foster mom said she'll know more about how house trained I am after that...I will say I have not done #2 in the house! I even asked to go outside last night.

One fun fact about me is that I have no teeth. I think it makes me pretty special (hello, cute tongue hanging out)! My foster mom found a nice thick pate she cuts up that I can eat just fine! I need to gain some weight so that's perfect for me (I'm about 11 lbs right now...and gaining!). I get along great with other dogs....my foster family has 2 small and 2 big ones; I like 'em all! Cats? Not so much. I like their human kids, though! They give me belly rubs a lot....that's a favorite. I do sleep all night in a little bed they got me that is next to their bed.

As far as my age....well, I am not sure! The dogtor says I am "middle aged". My foster mom is too, and she said that's a pretty good age to be. If you think you may be the right furever home for me, you can reach out to my foster mom. Thanks!
