My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Mason, a 7/8-year-old, Yorkie is a special boy. He needs an active home life, a firm person who understands the breed genetics, and works his needs so his quirks do not become behavior issues. Mason will always need to continue practice training to keep it fresh, daily rigorous activity (not just a yard), and strict discipline, structure, and routine. Positive enrichment training. Mason is 100% crate and house-trained and does NOT LIFT HIS LEG. He also walks nicely on a leash. Mason enjoys fast pace power walks and can easily walk 5 miles but settles for 1 mile. His recall off-leash is excellent, however, we do not trust him to ever be off-leash where he will encounter other dogs. Mason loves toys, especially squeaky toys. He is only permitted to play with them when trusted around other dogs. This trust comes with time and is very possible to be in his home but again it takes time. Mason also has behavior issues that manifest in a home setting so exercise, and patience will be a must. He does best with slow intros with any dog in his comfort environment. No children either! Mason is a one-person dog and needs just that. He needs a stern, EXPERIENCED OWNER who will not allow his issues to override his beautiful personality or dominate or be in charge. Mason has a little dog ASSHOLE SYNDROME. There is no other way of putting it. We do not apologize for being honest. We do however apologize for the words. Sadly Mason has had 5 trial homes and all have failed. Why? Because babying and nurturing his bad behaviors when babying him for being an adorable little dog goes to his head. Allowing any behavior will fuel all unwanted behaviors. COMMON STUPID MISTAKE people do with little dogs. Maybe too much freedom to fast and/or not enough structured discipline. What we do know is he has always done well at the Sanctuary. Never have anyone here experienced his behavior. We require that he sleep in his crate and interact with everyone like a dog. We also know he struggles with sounds that trigger him. However, these triggers we have learned second hand and have never experienced ourselves. Each home trigger was a different sound. Unfortunately, since we have never experienced them, we cannot work on the behavior. We do know it's TRUE as each potential adopter shared this. Mason requires an active home, meaning daily walks and continued work on basic obedience. Mason cannot be allowed to lead, take over, ever be treated as a baby, nor allowed what most people allow little dogs to get away with. He requires DISCIPLINE, STRUCTURE, AND ROUTINE. Also, we are requiring adopters to seek and continue behavior training support from a reputable trainer. Mason needs stability, guidance, discipline, and structure to maintain a healthy, balanced mindset or he will act out and, yes, he does bite. Once Mason is comfortable and allowed to behave poorly, he will become what we consider dominant.
Mason has been with us on and off for 5 years and has done great while with us, but he fails in every home. We have tried putting Mason on Prozac and he's been on it during the few months' trial period in his last home in the hope it would help, but it did not. We will speak to the vet and possibly try Trazadone in the hope this will help, but honestly, we don't know for sure until he is in a home setting. This is something we will try and consult with all potential adopters. Mason is fully vetted: all sets of vaccines including rabies, deworming/negative fecal, heartworm/ Lyme negative, and on monthly prevention.

We will NOT compromise on any requirements for Mason. If you are interested and feel you are experienced, knowledgeable, and capable of not just with the breed but little asshole bite dogs, please continue to proceed with the adoption application.

Triggers: Loud speaking/yelling. It makes Mason protective of his person. Sounds, but unfortunately they could be any out-of-the-ordinary or ordinary, sharp, everyday sounds. Example: sharp buzz or cans rattling. We have played these and gotten no reaction from him. We will continue to seek the best home for Mason. We also offer lifetime support, advice, and training for all our adopters. So, if this is not something you're seeking, please seek another rescue to adopt from. If this sounds like something you like and is acceptable to you, we welcome you to our AHS Family Team.

Mason is house and crate trained, up to date on all appropriate core vaccines including lepto, rabies, dewormed, fecal tested negative, microchipped, neutered, and on monthly heartworm flea/tick prevention.

We believe training is an ongoing process that needs to be worked on daily. New issues that arise, need to be addressed and/or rewarded. Understanding that continued training is a lifetime commitment, is very important.

Out-of-state adopters are welcome at the adopter's expense. Meet & Greets are required before proceeding with an adoption. We DO NOT ship any of our pets.
