My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Maple von Mallin is a beautiful, 2–3-year-old Shepherd mix. Maple is a very sweet girl who is easy to love as she melts in your arms. She'll shower you with kisses and lives to please her people. A very smart girl, she is housebroken and knows her basic commands, including 'sit,' 'down,' 'stay,' and others. She will do best with an experienced owner and an active lifestyle. When she sees the leash in your hand, she is just so excited. Maple has been working on her leash manners and is doing well. She will walk by your side in a ‘heel’ position, and with proper handling she'll nicely meet dogs along the way. In our canine play yard, she does very well greeting dogs and is so happy to see and play with her friends, but is also happy leaning up against you and soaking in all the affection you can give her. Maple is a “No, Thank You” for cats. She is looking forward to meeting you!

Based on our experience, Westside's current thinking is to usually match first-time shepherd owners with a mix versus a purebred shepherd. Mixes are "softer" and somewhat more malleable. Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor.
