My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

Put another dime in the jukebox, baby!

UPDATE 3/15/21:  Joan is a great dog! She was picked up by a shelter staff running down the  road, skinny with a severely itchy skin infection. This infection was so
long running that Joan has some areas of permeant hair loss. Joan also
managed to severely damage her left eye, most likely due to untreated
infection. However, these setbacks haven’t damaged Joan’s zest for life.
She is such an extrovert, greeting all enthusiasm. Joan is deeply convinced
that she is a lap dog and will take any opportunity to climb into your lap
for a cuddle. She does well with other dogs and cats. Joan is extremely
food motivated (see video of her breakfast happy dance) and has been house
trained. She is very smart and learned basic obedience, like sit, down, and
come, extremely quickly. She is moderate energy level and loves to snuggle
on the couch especially after a walk. My favorite thing about is her slight
snore when she sleeps deeply. It’s adorable.

Joan remained very itchy even after her skin infections healed. She was
allergy tested and is currently receiving hyposensitization (allergy) shots
to make her less reactive to her allergy triggers.  Once the initial series
is completed, Joan will need to receive a single subcutaneous injection
once a month at home for the rest of her life to prevent any further skin
complications.  Joan will need to receive certain nonprescription(!) foods
to avoid her triggers. An extensive list of foods that Joan can receive is
already put together and we will happily disclose it to any potential
adopters.

Joan can show signs of mild food aggression when she is eating or if you
are trying to take something delicious away from her. She has made an
incredible amount of progress in this area and now has a pretty good
“trade” cue. This work will need to be continued by any potential adopter
but she is learning by leaps and bounds.

Joan is a special dog and a great companion. She has had such a rough start
to her short life so far. I'm hoping someone will be willing to open their
home to this sweet, cuddly, enthusiastic, one-eyed dog with some extra
needs.

UPDATE 2/2/22:    Since September, Joan has been in foster care finding out what home-life is like.  While in foster care, she has learned good house manners and how to share her domain with a cat. She looks vibrant, acts capable, and her spirit is light.  Are you the one who will show her what it means to have a forever home?

UPDATE 6/23/21:  Joan came to us bewildered and bedraggled, and though obviously neglected, she gave us her trust from the beginning. Her fur was scraggly and thin, her skin was itchy and pink, and one eye was dull and damaged, yet she still managed to be adorable. Now that she is healthy, she is even cuter.

Her face has a bit of a Chinese Shar Pei look, with velveteen wrinkles on her brows and cheeks. We are not sure what her mix is, but it seems like there is some beagle or hound in the formula. Now that she has healed from a skin infection she came in with, her clean white fur shows off her warm brown patches.  Joan greets everyone with a smile and a happy tongue.

She is a compact 37 pounds (on the thin size) and has a very short coat. This sweet girl, who appears to be about 4 years old maybe, tries to keep her room unsoiled and neat. When she is settled down for the evening, she enjoys an interactive toy with something yummy inside. She also loves going on leash walks but is still learning to try not to hurry so much.  Joan has shown an interest in wanting to be friends with our other canine residents, and she seems not much interested in our caged kitties.

The intensity in which Joan looks at you with her one good eye, says it all—she loves Humans and wants nothing more than to spend her life with a few of her own.
