My story

To put it mildly, Cherry has seen a lot in her 10 years of life! Sadly, she is not new to the homeless scene and unfortunately this time around she is now much older and suffers from some easily managed health conditions that might make her less attractive to adopters. I mean to be honest -- Cherry isn't the easiest of dogs. Don't mishear us when we tell you this - we know she has value and we love her, but we also are well aware that she needs an angel on Earth to come for her because she has some needs that not everyone is willing to sign up for (I mean, we are just being honest here).

Cherry has allergies that cause severe skin irritation and fur loss if left untreated. It is possible that diet changes and even environmental changes could positively improve these allergies but because her condition was so severe when she landed in our rescue, we put her on allergy medication to clear up the severely irritated skin in hopes that further down the road we can adjust her diet to avoid medication. Cherry was adopted from a shelter by former owner and then when he died suddenly Cherry (along with her 3 dachshund brothers) found themselves under the care of animal control. Lucky for Cherry and her brothers -- a guardian angel (their former groomer) found out about their misfortune and stepped up to foster the entire crew until forever homes could be found. So Cherry has been hanging out with her foster family (and brothers) until her forever family hops along.

Here are some highlights about Cherry -- she LOVES to go on walks (like she would really prefer if you like to go on hikes with her because "adventure" is her middle name). She walks really well on a leash and can be very loving when she feels safe and on her terms. Because Cherry's allergies were left untreated for so long before coming into our rescue, she is extremely sensitive about her back being touched (if you saw the pictures of her condition at that time, you would understand). Cherry wants to be loved and has not always been so sensitive about her back -- so we expect as her condition continues to improve, her sensitivity to her back being touched will improve too. Cherry needs some work on housetraining and will require a home willing to work on those skills as she settles in -- she will potty outside but doesn't exactly know how to tell you that she needs to go but she is more than willing to show you that older dogs can learn new tricks! Because of Cherry's sensitivity to her back area and her tendency to be snappy about it, we are asking that she only go to homes without children. Cherry is fine with other dogs but prefers a quiet home as she is well beyond her years of puppy play. She is great company for someone who might be lonely and seeking a reason to get out and exercise. She will cheer you on as you accomplish all of your exercising goals!

In short, Cherry needs a savior. We are willing to admit she isn't an easy dog but she has so much value to the home that is willing to overlook her misgivings and will amplify her good traits! We know this darling girl is a diamond in the rough and in time will shine once she has had time to be polished. Cherry is spayed and has had a complete dental. Thank you to our friends at Rose + Anchor Photography for caputring Cherry's best side -- and her personality -- in these adorable photographs.
