My story

The adoption fee is waived for Jacobina and ALL Desperate Housecats!

Jacobina is a very special girl! She`s a `tripod`, meaning she only has three legs, and she is now in our Cactus Cats program for shy and sometimes prickly kitties who need a little extra guidance and marketing. Jacobina is currently working on building trust with humans through our special clicker training process called Cat Pawsitive. We don`t know a lot about her history since she arrived as a stray, but we continue to learn what we can about her at the shelter. Since she is 3 legged, this puts her at a disadvantage outdoors, so we recommend an indoor only or secure indoor/outdoor environment where no potential predators can access her. Jacobina is also FIV+ which is not a big deal, it just means she needs access to medical care if she gets sick.

We would currently describe Jacobina as a `Saguaro Cactus Cat`. The Saguaro is independent and free. They don’t need much from you beyond food and shelter. This cactus cat may never be your cuddle buddy, but they still make wonderful companions, and they often get along well with other cats! You can read more about Cactus Cats here:

Additional adoption info

Our standard Adoption fee for healthy, younger pets is $75. Pets over 7 years old have no adoption fee. Adoption includes a microchip and collar & tags, all the vaccinations a pet is old enough to receive, and spay or neuter surgery.
Adopters must be at least 18 yrs old with a current photo ID. Pets already in the home should have a current rabies vaccination and we may need to confirm permission for adoption from the owner of the property where an adopter lives.

Go meet their pets

The Austin Animal Center is open for adoptions every day from 11:00am to 7:00pm. We're closed Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Thanksgiving Day to give our staff some time with family.
Interested adopters should come to the shelter during business hours to meet with a counselor start looking for a pet who'll be a good fit. Our counselors and volunteers are happy to help with that process.

More about this shelter

Austin Animal Center is the largest open-intake animal shelter in central Texas and we work very hard to try to save 90% or more of the thousands of animals we shelter every year. We always need volunteers and both monetary and in-kind donations to help us in our sheltering and prevention activities. Visit our website to find out how you can help!
