I'M PART OF THE REWARDS PROGRAM AND MY ADOPTION FEE IS WAIVED. WE WILL ALSO PAY MY FOSTER OR ADOPTER $500.
IT'S BACK! Our REWARDS Program is launching again and we need your help to promote it. What is it?
HT has a number of dogs that need very special homes. These dogs have been failed by humans along the way, leaving them homeless and with issues from their treatment. We'll be honest. Some of them are real jerks. But not always. And not to everyone. Not everyone can be charming ALL the time, right? Others are just fearful and don't like other animals because they have had a bad interaction at some point. Some of them love other dogs but are just plain scared of everything. But all of them are good on the inside. And we believe that ALL of them deserve a chance at life and love. And we're looking to find the right human out there to make that happen. But competition is tough. And they're up against small, well-behaved doggies...so we are offering incentives for special humans willing to give these pooches a chance. WE WANT YOU!
***We are paying $500 to any approved foster or adopter of our REWARDS dogs.***
The human will also get ongoing training support, all supplies covered and a $25 Amazon gift card each month for 6 months. You will learn and grow. You will be doing a world of good for a dog who has really had it rough in life.
Our REWARDS dog is TACO DAN:
Is there anything better than a Taco? We didn't think so!
He may have an over-the-top name, but Taco Dan wouldn't have it any other way. Legend has it he got his name because he's as irresistible as a platter of tacos, but we know he has stories he could tell. Originally from West Virginia, Taco takes getting to know people very seriously. While you may consider that an old-timey value, TD (as his friends call him) certainly doesn't. He wants to take time to get to know you and for you to get to know him. The better your relationship, the more of his playful and soft side he'll show you. For example, upon meeting him, you might not know he loves belly rubs and the ladies. You have to work to earn his trust, but once he's let you in, he'll never get enough belly rubs. Once you've built that relationship, he'll even let you dress him up as an actual taco! What's more - he's one of our smartest dogs. He knows so many tricks and skills he'd love to show off to you.
So why is he a REWARDS dog? Taco is looking for a quiet adult-only home (one or two humans) where he'd be the only animal (believe or not, he's scared of cats). He would do best in a single family home or townhouse where he'd have direct access to outside (shared hallways are scary!). He's good on leash but a super busy neighborhood might be a little too much for him if the sidewalks are too crowded.
And we saved the best part for last - he's internet famous. Or at least he's trying to be. You can check him out on Instagram at @its_taco_dan_time where he reviews different tacos and shows off his silly side (and his adopters will get to take over the managerial duties). Taco isn't feeling very excited about the prospect of spending another holiday without a home of his own and humans to cuddle with by the fireplace.
Taco can have his toys packed up before you can say "guac is extra." His adoption fee is $0 and his basic essentials are packed up and ready to go too! Want to meet this great guy? Email adoptioncenter@homewardtrails.org
I'm part of the REWARDS program and my adoption fee is sponsored! The adoption fee for this dog is $0. This fee includes spay/neuter and microchip.
We are proud to partner with the following veterinarians who offer a free first exam for your animal, exclusively for HT adopters: Caring Hands Animal Hospital, Palisades Veterinary Clinic, Sunshine Animal Hospital and Clarendon Animal Care and all VCA Animal Hospitals. Additionally, any VCA hospital will cover illnesses up to $250 at no cost to any Homeward Trails adopter.
We also provide free online workshop with a professional dog trainer at Fur-Get Me Not within the first 30 days of adopting - just for HT adopters in the Arlington/Alexandria/Falls Church/DC area. Start your new dog out on the right foot with this valuable, expert guidance FREE!
You can save animals like this one by becoming a foster! Fosters are like way stations between high kill shelters and forever homes. We need fosters so that we can save dogs before they are euthanized at the shelters. If you are interested in becoming a foster, please check out our information about fostering by visiting http://www.homewardtrails.org/foster-a-pet/dog-and-cat-foster-program

You will first be required to complete our Adoption Questionnaire (http://www.homewardtrails.org/adopt-a-pet/adoption-forms/). Once received, a Homeward Trails rep will contact you via phone or e-mail. Please allow 72 hours for a response. If it seems you are a good fit for each other based on the info you provided, a phone interview will follow. If you are renting, we require proof that you are allowed to have a pet as well as any breed or size restrictions that may exist. If you have pets or did previously, we require your vet information and we will call them to verify that your pets are in good health, current on vaccines and spayed/neutered. We require that all pets in the home be spayed/neutered unless there are health reasons that can be verified with the vet.
Homeward Trails' adoption fees range depending on type of animal, the originating shelter and the vetting the animal has received. Our adoption fees are set to allow us to cover our expenses as well as to help other animals in our program that require additional care. Our fees cover vetting costs, shelter fees, fuel for transport, copying and printing of contracts and paperwork, our website presence, food, boarding, behavioral training and additional medical care. It is important to note that while the animal you adopt may not require all of these things, many other animals in our system do. Thus, any "extra" money from adoption fees goes to help those animals who may require additional care. By adopting from Homeward Trails, you are not saving just one life, you are helping to save others as well.

More about this rescue
Homeward Trails seeks to find permanent adoptive homes in the Mid-Atlantic Region for dogs and cats from under resourced shelters or whose owners can no longer care for them. In so doing, we seek to reduce the rate of euthanasia of adoptable animals through the rescue and placement of homeless animals; to support proactive spay/neuter practices; to promote positive and ongoing behavioral training; and to educate the public about how to care for their animals in a humane way. Homeward Trails not only facilitates adoptions from local shelters, but also supports a large network of foster care providers who take homeless dogs and cats into their homes, care for them, rehabilitate them when needed, and prepare them for their permanent adoptive homes.
Sadly, without our help, all of these adoptable animals would face almost certain euthanasia - usually within days or hours of our rescuing them. Each year we take in hundreds of wonderful animals who were left at shelters through no fault of their own.
Many are puppies and kittens – innocent victims of irresponsible pet owners who don’t spay/neuter. Some are abandoned hunting dogs who served their owners well and were dumped in woods or left at shelters when they were no longer wanted. Others are house pets whose owners simply grew tired of caring for them or moved and did not take them along. And even more are animals that have been injured, abused and neglected. Whatever the reasons, these animals all deserve better. And once with Homeward Trails, they get better!
Our Principles:
1. To always operate in the best interest of the animals we take into our program and to advocate for the proper care of those in shelters and in private homes;
2. To provide quality care for the animals we take in for as long as they are in our program and to provide ongoing support to our adopters;
3. To always maintain a manageable number of animals in our system whereby we can ensure proper medical care, behavioral training and housing for the animals;
4. To rescue the widest array of dogs and cats by avoiding general discrimination based on breed, age, and health;
5. To provide our shelter partners and their communities with resources that will result in the highest level of care for their animals, an increase in spay/neuter surgeries and a decrease in the abuse, neglect and abandonment of dogs and cats;
6. To treat our volunteers, adopters and partners with understanding, patience and support
