My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

COURTESY POST IN SPRINGDALE, AR
Hello, my name is Maverick and I love to play catch in the backyard and to take long walks
every day. I have a lot of energy.
Quick Facts:
Breed: Standard Australian Shepherd – red tri
Gender: Male neutered
Age: 9 months
Size: 55 pounds (est)
Good with…
Dogs- Yes, will try to herd them.
Cats- Not so much
Kids- Has not been around children
History:
Maverick was bought by a family member as a Christmas present for girlfriend.
Unfortunately, not enough research into the Aussie breed and the level of activity necessary for this breed was done. The Nashville lifestyle, small back yard, no fence and lack of time to exercise Maverick led to many problems. As a result, Maverick became bored and a bored Maverick means something will be destroyed. Maverick was not well socialized due to work schedules of the original owners. As a result, leash training was minimal. We have been using a
choke and shock collar to improve walking on a leash.

We have had Maverick in XNA for the last 4 weeks. As we exercise him daily (walk 5-6 miles) and play catch in large fenced in back yard, many of his destructive issues have diminished.

THIS IS ME: Here are my likes and dislikes.
I love to snack on ice, crushed or cubed, it doesn’t matter. I will not share my snacks at
all.
I like to be fed in my crate, as I do not share my food.
I will go outside if you say “go potty” and will go pee pee.
I do not bark or scratch at door to go out but stand silently for you to let me out.
I love long walks. (Currently 5-6 miles a day split between morning and late afternoon.)
Please do not put my leash on around other dogs.
I love to play chase and play catch with a tennis ball or football. Really any ball will do.
If you throw a frisbee, I will chase after it but I prefer a frisbee as a chew toy.
I have several toys to play with. Just say, “Maverick bring me a toy” and I love to bring a toy for us to play with.
I love belly rubs and ear rubs and booty scratches.
I love to be hugged and rubbed. Brushing is OK.
I know ‘sit’ (with hand fisted forward), ‘lie down’ (fingers pointed down) and ‘bangbang’ (fingers like a gun). I respond and learn quickly with treats.
When walking I know ‘come’ to keep walking be side, and ‘hold’ when strange people or
creatures come toward me. I still struggle to not leap and bark at 2-leg or 4-leg
creatures.
I like to play chase and to herd. Some creatures do not want to play with me because
I’m so young.
Please leave the toilet-lid down. The water is very inviting.
I love to bark at doggies on T.V.
I sleep in my crate at night. Wake-up is 6:00am.
Cohabitation:
I like new people but not at first. I will bark at strangers and leap-up onto them. After about 5 minutes, I become your best friend.
I currently live with two older dogs who just want to lay around and sleep. They don’t
like to play chase with me even when I wag my booty at them.
I’ve never been around cats. What are they?
Favorite activities:
o Run
o Play chase
o Catch balls
o Play tug with toy
o Go for walks
o Belly rubs
o Cuddle my face and rub my ears
Why I need a new home:
We have two older dogs who are rescues. They are very stressed by Maverick.
Maverick barks and paws and leaps at them to play and our older dogs snap at him. They do
not like to be herded by Maverick.
Medical Concerns: None
Summary:
We do love Maverick. If we did not have our other 2 dog’s we would be keeping him.
He’s enthusiastic and eager to learn new tricks and commands. He’s very intelligent and a very sweet dog once a relationship of trust is developed. We would love to see Maverick with people who are active, (running, hiking, walking) or on a ranch or farm with plenty of room to run. We would love to see Maverick with a family willing to have him professionally trained.
