My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Jax von Jagel is a beautiful, 13-14 month-old German Shepherd mix. Want a large, fluffy puppy with a larger-than-life personality? Jax is your boy! This handsome pup is a total goofball who just needs to be taught the ways of the world. He comes out for his walk with a wagging tail and, when he pulls from excitement, responds to leash directions well. He does fine walking with a group of dogs. And in his playgroups he bounces up to other dogs, ready to socialize, and loves doing zoomies around the yard. He even likes to splash around in the kiddie pool! When he is done, he will come up to people for head rubs and takes treats gently when he “sits” and “shakes.” Still young, he can be prone to kiddish excitement and will need an owner who sets limits and continues his training. (No cats please.) Jax can’t wait to meet you!

Based on our experience, Westside's current thinking is to usually match first-time shepherd owners with a mix versus a purebred shepherd. Mixes are "softer" and somewhat more malleable. Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor.
