DeeDee was turned into the Madera, CA with another dog that looked exactly like her but was a little bigger and older. It was assumed that this was DeeDee’s mother. A humane society in the bay area rescued the two of them. However, both dogs were extremely unsocialized (”feral”). The mother was less feral than DeeDee, so the humane society kept her to adopt out, but they were going to euthanize DeeDee, so they called us to help. The mother was eventually adopted out to a family, but is still semi-feral.
DeeDee has been in a couple of foster homes. In her first foster home, she found an escape route out of the backyard. After a couple days she returned to the house, probably because she was hungry. Then she was able to get under the home’s crawl space and lived there for a couple weeks. Due to her food motivation, the family was able to trap her. We then transferred her to another more secure foster home.
DeeDee is still fairly feral. She avoids interaction with the humans in the home, but likes to play with some of the other dogs. As a cattle dog, she is VERY SMART. Her foster home has lots of dogs and fairly complex feeding routine. DeeDee picked up on very quickly. Even though she is not thrilled with human interaction, she tolerates being handled by anyone. She has never tried to snap.
DeeDee needs a permanent foster home with a secure fenced in backyard and couple of friendly, playful dogs. In a home with less dogs than her current foster homes, she may try and bond with the humans in the home.
Please note that we do not adopt any of our dogs out to families with children under the age of 13.
