Mila was brought to the Contra Costa County Shelter in Martinez with 3 other young dogs, as “strays”. However, it is believed that the dogs were part of a litter that the owner’s dog had, but were kept in the backyard for a year, before bringing them to the shelter. All four dogs were transferred to the Berkeley Shelter. Then Mila’s litter mates all went to a small rescue in San Francisco, leaving Mila behind as “too feral.” Berkeley Shelter contacted us to pull her into foster care.
She is still very leery around people. In her current foster home (of 11 months), she will allow one of her foster dads to give affection and occasionally she will seek it out, but only when everyone is on the bed and there are other foster dogs around. Mila LOVES (in all caps) other dogs, to the point where her clingy-ness can aggravate some dogs. However, she has learned to trust people through her love for the dogs that already trust people.
She has no leash skills and will probably never do well on a walk, but she is a great house/yard dog. She ABSOLUTELY has to be in a home that have other dogs with whom she can bond (we think she is trying to replace her litter mates that went to a different rescue). Because she can’t be walked, she needs a home with a fenced-in yard where she can go pee and poop.
Please note that we don’t adopt any of our dogs out to homes with children under the age of 13.

After the application is approved, the prospective adopter must take the dog on a trial-basis "sleepover" for a few days, before finalizing the adoption.
We require landlord approval if the applicant is renting their living space.
We only do adoptions in San Francisco Bay Area and surrounding regions.
We DO NOT adopt to families with children under the age of 13.

We specialize in finding homes for dogs where “imperfection” is tolerated in exchange for a lifetime of love and devotion.
Our foster dogs have been discarded by the people they once trusted, only to find themselves in a shelter with no other options.
We want them to have a second chance to receive the love and care they deserve.
