My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

"FODHLA" -- you may remember Fodhla (It is pronounced "Foh'-lah", a Celtic name that she knows quite well). She and her two littermates came into rescue a couple of years ago after they were rescued from a backyard breeder. The three girls were very shy and frightened, but NEBCR found them each wonderful new homes. Now Fodhla is back because her new owner is very ill and heartbroken that she can't care for Fodhla the way she needs. Fodhla has some guarding issues around food and toys, so we will not place her in a home with children under 9 or 10 years old. She is ok with other dogs, but would do best with an older, calmer dog, preferably a male, although she is getting along with a female in her foster home, who happens to have also come from the same backyard breeder only a year or two before Fodhla. She has some separation anxiety, so a home where there is someone home or at least not away for long hours of the day would also be best. Fodhla has a good recall, and is very smart and well-mannered. She does not like to ride in the car, but just gets down on the floor and shakes. She is still shy and will hide in dark places when something frightens her. We attribute her problems to the time she spent in formative months running wild at the home of the backyard breeder. She will need an owner who will have the patience and fortitude to force Fodhla out of her comfort zones while still allowing her to adjust to new situations in her own way. Her foster mom is making her interact with the rest of her dogs for at least part of every day, and this seems to be having a good effect on her. The adopter will have to be patient, but firm, and not let her hide away. Fodhla is being fostered in Maine.

IMPORTANT: You should always choose a breed/dog that matches your CURRENT lifestyle. Border Collies are not for everyone, and contrary to popular misconception, most are NOT typically “great family pets” and “wonderful with children.” (If that were true, there would not be nearly as many in rescue!)

Before inquiring about adopting a dog from us, we recommend you do a little research to find out if a Border Collie really is right for your family. For this information, and details on our adoption process, please see our web site www.NEBCR.org.

Please note that you MUST FIRST fill out an adoption application AND have a home visit BEFORE being considered for any NEBCR dog. Our rescue representatives cannot consider you to adopt ANY dog until your application has been submitted and approved.

For more about Fodhla (including rescue contact information), and for more about other dogs currently available for adoption, please see our web site www.NEBCR.org.
