My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Kelani is an adorable 9 year old 8.7 pound Yorkie girl. She is being fostered in Orlando, FL
All dogs being fostered in Florida must be adopted within the state of Florida.

UPDATED BIO 10/02/2021: Kelani has been in her foster home for 3 weeks now. Her previous owner brought her into the shelter to have her euthanized – what?? The shelter immediately reached out to UYR to see if we would bring this sweet girlie into our Foster Care Program. Of course we said YES!

Kelani wanted to update everyone on how she is doing – what a sassy little lady - read what she said below:

Hey there, Kelani here with an update on my big trip to a specialty vet hospital in Jacksonville. It took us two whole hours to get there, but I didn't mind, I love car rides. And my foster mom told me I was worth every minute of the drive. Gee, I must be a very special doggie.

I saw a very nice lady dogtor who gave me that special test everyone's been talking about. She called it an Echocardiogram. She said it wouldn't hurt a bit and asked me to lay on my side on this cold table. Brrr! But I did as she asked and I was real still. I was a really good girl. The dogtor said so, too. She was right, the test was easy peasy.

When she was all done, she went into another room to tell my foster mom what she found on the test. My foster mom later told me what the dogtor said. It seems that both of my heart valves (I didn't know I had two) are leaky. As a result, one of the chambers in my heart was slightly enlarged. Yikes! But she said for me not to worry. I will need to have this test repeated in 6-9 months for comparison. If there's a change, I will have to take some medicine for the rest of my life, but I don’t need it now. I will need to have this test every year after that. The dogtor said the leaky valves were age related. What!? I'm only nine years old!

So I wanted to tell my adoring public what’s ahead for me. Whoever adopts me needs to be aware of the added expense for my care. I will need a yearly Echocardiogram which will cost around $700. And if I ever need to be put on medication, it will be for the rest of my life.

But think about the many positive things I will bring to my lucky adopter. Most importantly, I’m very very sweet. I'm obedient. I'm small, so I don't eat very much. I'm house-trained. I love car rides. I walk well on a leash. I'm friendly to people and other small dogs. I'm up to date on my vaccinations. I'm spayed and will have my teeth cleaned next week.

I don't play with toys much, but my foster mom is still trying to get me interested in them. I don't know about young children and foster mom said it would be best if my new home didn't have anyone younger than 12-14 years old. I would prefer that my new mom/dad was retired, worked part-time or worked from home. I don't like to be left alone for long periods of time.

I should be ready for adoption by October 9th. So, if you want a awesome little doggie, I'm your girl.

From Foster Mom: The costs of Kelani's exam and Echocardiogram with the cardiologist was $552. If you are moved by Kelani's spirit and her story, please consider donating towards the cost of this very important test. Your donations will allow us to not only help Kelani, but will also allow us to help other little doggies who also need us. Any little bit you can contribute will help. So, if you find it in your heart to help, please click on the donate button under Kelani's bio and donate whatever you can. If you are unable to donate, please send prayers to this little sweetie that the perfect adopter(s) will fall in love with this precious little girlie.

Kelani out.
