My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Leo von Lehrberg is a beautiful 16-month-old German Shepherd (mix?). This super-affectionate pup is an all-around engaging, happy and playful guy. Leo is friendly with everyone he meets, has done well with children, and can’t wait to shower you with gentle kisses. He loves to rest his head in your lap and look up to ask for head scratches with those beautiful eyes. He is housebroken, crate-trained, and knows his sit and down commands. Leo enjoys his walks and trips to the dog park. While he may pull a bit at the start, he quickly settles in. In his playgroups, Leo is the resident concierge – he likes to greet his furry buddies as they enter the yard, and he is happy to play and explore with the pack. Leo is a sweet boy who adores attention from humans and dogs alike. (He has done well with small dogs but says no to kitty friends.) He'll do best with people who are around more and another playful pup. If you’re looking for a happy young dog, Leo would love to meet you!

Based on our experience, Westside's current thinking is to usually match first-time shepherd owners with a mix versus a purebred shepherd. Mixes are "softer" and somewhat more malleable. Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor.
