My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

We pulled Charlotte from one of the kill shelters in the south because she was tested positive for heartworm. Heartworms are parasites that live in the pulmonary arteries of dogs. Many dogs get it in the south, and because the treatment is so expensive, most of them go untreated, which ultimately ends up with the same outcome for the animal- euthanasia. These statistics are extremely unsettling, and we wanted to help as much as we could, even if it was just that one dog. We brought Charlotte to NY a few months ago, and after weeks of special medications, she was finally ready to start her therapy. Part of the difficulty is that immature heartworm adults are immune to all known therapies. Doctors usually wait a few months after diagnosis before starting adulticide therapy (melarsomine). This way, the immature adults fully mature, and we can kill all of the worms with one treatment. Since the heartworm can be so deadly and sometimes the animals don’t survive the treatment, we decided to bring Charlotte to the emergency hospital to have a cardiologist and other specialists on stand-by in case something goes wrong. After doing everything we could for Charlotte and three months after her final treatment, we were ready to re-test her bloodwork. And we are happy to announce that we were able to cure our sweet pup! Charlotte is finally heartworm NEGATIVE! This means she's ready to start a new journey- her search for her forever family!
