Riki von Rheinholz is a stunning, 1-2 year-old, long-haired German Shepherd. This is an all-around happy, good guy. Riki comes out of the kennel grinning and ready for a walk. If it turns out there’s a gang of dogs to walk with, well, all the better. He just looks forward to all the interesting new scents to explore and all the new people and dogs to meet. He’s a medium-sized, medium-energy dog with an outstanding fluffy coat -- a sweetheart who never says no to ear rubs and head scratches. While Rico relishes calmly sitting by your side and observing the world, sometimes a fellow just has to get goofy, and he knows that play group is a place to have fun. He comes into the off-leash yard happy and ready to socialize and explore. He’s a great one for romping with the other dogs but takes time off from the melee to mingle with the people there too. He hopes for a pet, but also likes a treat or two, which he sits for and accepts gently with his lovely, silly smile. Riki would enjoy another pup in the home, but he's a no for kitties.

Based on our experience, Westside's current thinking is to usually match first-time shepherd owners with a mix versus a purebred shepherd. Mixes are "softer" and somewhat more malleable. Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor.
