Firefly is a juvenile red-eared slider turtle. She was surrendered by her previous owner because she was "unwanted". She has become a lot more sociable since being at Lost Woods, and will usually come up to our hands curiously to see if we have snacks!
Red-eared sliders need large aquatic setups with good filtration and are not typically friendly to handle. However, many hobbyists enjoy this species because they are enjoyable and relaxing to feed and watch as they swim about.

We are currently open by appointment only to see all the pets, but we frequently appear at farmer's markets and other local events with adoptable animals.

More about this shelter
We are a specialty rescue for small exotic pets, such as reptiles and small mammals. We were formed by two women who met working at a nature center. In their interactions with the public they noticed a need in the area for a rescue that specialized in exotic pets, as well as a value in public education. Lost Woods Animal Sanctuary was formed with the mission to reduce mistreatment and abandonment of animals through rescue and rehoming, as well as educational outreach.
