My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Will not adopt out of state or out of the area at all. sorry. Must Live locally in order to adopt. South County is fine. No LA area , No Simi valley No thousand Oaks.

Meet Maverick. He’s a 3 month old chihuahua/lab mix from Woodlake, CA. His owner surrendered him to Girl of Dog Rescue, after his chihuahua got pregnant by a stray lab. His siblings all found homes, but he did not. He lived outdoors, ignored by people and not knowing the positive touch of a loving human being. His first months of life were brought up in fear and neglect.

Maverick is now in a loving foster home, waiting for his forever home. He currently weighs around 20 pounds. Since his mother was a chihuahua, we assume he won’t grow to be as big as a standard Labrador. We estimate full grown, on the lower end, he could weigh anywhere between 40-50 pounds and on the higher end, 50-60 pounds. Please understand that these are estimates and we have no way to guarantee the size of him as an adult.

He is very shy and timid but not aggressive. He just avoids a situation he is not comfortable with. He’s been in his foster home now for a week and has come a long way. With love, patience, and consistency, he will come out of his shell and thrive. He has already learned how to use a dog door and will put himself outside frequently. He will also ask to go out to potty by standing by the front door. He is learning to play with toys. He has never known human touch to be positive and is learning that pets and scratches are a good thing. His foster mom is a professional animal trainer and care taker and is praising him just for being a dog and doing normal dog things without fear. He shares his foster home with a senior, large breed dog who is a gentle giant with him, but not into playing much. He spends his days playing with his foster sisters who are both small breeds and young. He has bonded with one of them and follows her lead in a lot of situations. He also shares his foster home with a mini pig. He is warming up to his foster parents and will nap next to them and he does follow them around the house and yard. He may become a water dog as he is not afraid of the hose and ventures around the pond and stream on his foster property. He avoids the pool, so far. Every day in his foster home he gets more confident. Thus far he is very well mannered and sweet.

Maverick will require being in a home with another young, medium/large breed dog for him to play with. He really needs the companionship dog between 1-4 years old and security. He bonds strongly with a canine companion versus a human companion at this point in time. He will do better in a home without young, active children. He wouldn’t hurt them, but their hyperactivity is currently not a good situation for him and would most likely stress him out. He would also do great in a home with a yard he can play in. With stability and love, he will overcome his fears and be a wonderful addition to a household.

Maverick will be available for adoption once fully vaccinated. He is also available for as a “foster to adopt” for someone willing to bring him to all future vet appointments in Orange County. If you are interested in giving Maverick his forever home, please contact Girls of Dog Rescue.
