Pancho was rescued from the streets of Merida with another dog by one of our long time supporters. The dogs had clearly been living on the streets for some time, as starving doesn't begin to describe how skinny they were. They were also both virtually fur-less. Although their skin issues completely resolved with proper treatment, Pancho's body still has some scars, especially on his muzzle. (As an aside and for a little humour, the second dog was named Palillo (which means "little stick" in Spanish) due to how skinny he was. He's now called "Bolillo" ("round bread roll") because he's actually quite fat!) Pancho was initially somewhat food aggressive due to his history, but with time has come to understand that he'll always now have
food and does not compete for food with the dogs in his area. He was initially wary of people but is now a lovable, friendly chap that welcomes being petted and receiving affection.

* Flight risk: we consider all of our dogs to be potential flight risk until they are well settled in and their family knows them well. well enough to understand what they react to
** Our dogs eat a different variety of dry food, depending on what we receive in donations. We use a local Mexican brand of kibble called Perruno when not using donations.
*** Sadly, our Paws on Pavement program stopped some years ago due to lack of volunteers, so few of our dogs have ever experienced being walked on a leash leash.
**** Our shelter is located on a country road, so our dogs are not used to high traffic areas and will need help learning about living in a big city.
