Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Sophie von Salching is a delightful 3-4 year old German Shepherd mix. She is a smaller-sized (~40 lbs), friendly girl who likes to give kisses in exchange for full-body pets and belly rubs. Happy and outgoing, Sophie loves to meet people and pups alike, and she's always up for fun and adventure. She's also a smartie, and knows her "sit", "down" and "shake" commands, taking treats gently. She likes being active, loves water and enjoys going on walks or runs and being around other dogs. She loves our monthly group hikes to Griffith Park and is great on leash. She learns quickly to walk at your pace and stay by your side. Around kids, she's gentle, kind and patient. She's housebroken and crate trained. In playgroup, she goes up to every dog with a wagging tail, and happily runs around. While she's sociable with all sorts of dogs and people -- she's not for cats. Sophie is a precious gem - a special girl with a big heart. If you are looking for a kind, affectionate and happy pup who will give you all her affection and attention, Sophie is the one for you!

Based on our experience, Westside's current thinking is to usually match first-time shepherd owners with a mix versus a purebred shepherd. Mixes are "softer" and somewhat more malleable. Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor.
